Good morning. I’m still pinching myself about being a recipient of the 2026 Mass Cultural Council Grant for Creative Individuals. I’m deeply grateful to and the panel of judges.

These are pieces of my entry in the Visual Arts category, from my “Self-Reconstructed” series.

1. Analog Girl in a Digital World, cyanotype and inkjet prints, woven, 2023.

2. Self-Portrait as a Cyborg, cyanotype print, 2025.

3. Facing a New Era, cyanotype print, image captured in 2023, printed in 2024. Frame by

4. 'Me' in Red, White, and Blue. Cyanotype print, ink, 2023.

5. Intergenerational Swim Lessons. Archival pigment prints, woven, 2025.

My self-portraits emerged shortly before I entered my fifties, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The resurgent xenophobic sentiments from that time reminded me that my “American” status is precarious, despite having been a naturalized U.S. citizen since I was a teenager. I wanted to be invisible, but I decided to fight. So, I created self-portraits in various media that called to me. This creative journey led to more introspective works that express the complications of modernity, familial ties, and what it means to be an American, an ethnic Chinese, a woman, a human.

Congratulations to fellow visual artists/photographers who also received this Mass Cultural Council Grant for Creative Individuals:
