In honor of the Winter Olympics, a stroll down memory lane ❄️🏔️
The trip where we almost got stuck in the fourth largest snowstorm in Denver history. The plan was simple. Start at Red Rocks, then head to Breckenridge. We knew things were about to get wild when we rolled into Red Rocks at 6 AM in a full blizzard with maybe 25 feet of visibility.
Fast forward to heading back from Breck. We get word a storm is moving in. No big deal… except the rental car had literal racing slicks on it (last photo). Pro tip always check your tires before you’re 30 miles into the mountains thinking “oh I’m sure it’ll be fine.”
About two hours into the drive toward Denver, the road got steep, the wheels started spinning, and gravity took over. We slid about 45 minutes down the mountain to the nearest store for tire chains, then headed back up for another 45 minutes. Same steep curve. Time for chains. They didn’t fit 🤦♂️
So it was 45 minutes back down again to Walmart, right chains acquired, then another 45 minutes back up the same road. A drive that should’ve taken 1 hour and 27 minutes was now turning into an all day event.
By now road laws didn’t exist. The only rule was do not stop the car from moving. Gas stations weren’t even an option anymore, the snow was up over your hips. The car barely made it into the hotel parking lot and we didn’t even reach a space. We just parked in the middle of the road and called it a win.
Took nearly 9 hours but left with one of the most fun adventures I’ve ever had. Would do it again in a heartbeat 🤍❄️
