Reflections on my first year at 40.

Turning 40 isn’t scary. People call you “ma’am” a lot more often, and your body complains in whole new ways—but there’s no magic shift when you cross into a new decade that once upon a time seemed impossibly old.

Trust your intuition the first time; people who hurt you show you where your boundaries belong. Their childhood doesn’t excuse their choices and their battles don’t excuse their behavior. When someone shows you who they are—believe them. And walk away.

At the end of the day, we only truly have two things: our time and our health. Guard them fiercely. Slow down. Care for yourself. Savor the smallest gestures and quiet moments the world has to offer. And find gratitude in both the joy and the hardship.

Forgive yourself for doing the best you could with the tools you had. Forgive others for doing the same. Forgiveness is freedom.

And remember: your parents are on their first draft of life, too. They’re learning as they go. So meet them with gentleness. With grace. And with kindness.

Learn to apologize. To sit in discomfort. To listen more than you speak. And to give more than you take.

And as you navigate the second half of life, let go of past regrets and remember: you can do anything you absolutely want.
