Bridging Borders
by John Bernhard
In a land divided, torn by strife and pain,
Two 12-year-old boys, a bond they'd gain.
One from Israel, a Jewish heart so true,
The other Palestinian, with dreams anew.
Hand in hand, they braved the troubled line,
Where hatred's fires burned, an endless climb.
Their friendship grew, like flowers in the sun,
Two souls united, becoming one.
They laughed, they played, with innocence untamed,
The world around them, forever changed.
But in their hearts, they couldn't comprehend,
Why adults fought, where would it end?
Innocence a shield, they dared to dream,
Of a future bright, where hope would gleam.
They stood against the tempest's howling gales,
Two young heroes, in the face of unknown trails.
As war raged on, a relentless storm,
Both lost their parents, their hearts forlorn.
Now orphans, with tears that wouldn't dry,
They found in each other, the reason to try.
Together they faced the world's disdain,
A Jewish boy, a Palestinian in pain.
In their unity, they found their strength,
For love, they'd go to any length.
They shared their stories, their deepest fears,
Wiped away each other's orphaned tears.
Their friendship, like a beacon shining bright,
Guided them through the darkest of nights.
In their hearts, a vision would take hold,
A bridge of peace, their dream to unfold.
They imagined a viaduct, a symbol so grand,
Spanning the rift in their war-torn land.
For they knew love could conquer the divide,
And in their hearts, that truth would reside.
Innocence and friendship, a lasting flame,
Two boys living life, not in a world of blame.
And they vowed to build that bridge of peace,
Where hatred and anger would finally cease.

To bridge the gap between earth and sky. Photo by Ricki Rosen
