Jenna’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and continuing to fully embrace life.

A Stage 3 breast cancer survivor, endurance athlete, traveler, and dog lover, she shared so openly about the experiences that have shaped her over the years — from navigating menopause after cancer treatment to completing triathlons and marathons, rediscovering joy in this season of life, and learning to prioritize what matters most.

One thing she said that stayed with me was this:

“Women over 50 are far from over the hill.”

I think so many women will see pieces of themselves in her story.

It was such an honor to photograph her for the 50 Over 50 Portrait Experience, and I’m excited to share a glimpse of her session here.

Laura wrote this in her 50 Over 50 Questionnaire, and I don’t think a single woman reading this needs to be reminded how true that is.

Five years ago, Laura was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She told me the hardest part wasn’t even the treatment. It was telling the people she loved.

Most of her appointments happened during the early days of the pandemic, when she had to walk into them alone.

And yet here she is.

Warm. Elegant. Joyful. Deeply present.

She told me:
“You realize just how strong and brave you can be when you have to. I'm one lucky lady!”

This is exactly why I created the 50 Over 50 Portrait Experience.

Because women over 50 carry stories that deserve to be seen.
Stories of survival.
Growth.
Family.
Wisdom.
Love.

“I almost chickened out.” Jessica laughed when she said it the day of her 50 Over 50 shoot, but she meant it. She truly almost didn’t come to her photo shoot.

She talked openly about body dysmorphia before, during, and after her session, and how uncomfortable aging has felt lately. But when asked why she decided to go forward with her shoot now, she said (through tears):

“I’ve had a lot of life changes recently, and I just decided it was time…time to accept it and move on gracefully.”

I think so many women over 50 understand that feeling more than they realize.

Jessica almost canceled her photo shoot.

Then she almost canceled her ordering appointment too, because “I just knew there would be exactly ZERO photos I would like; I never do well in photos.”

And honestly, she believed that.

But then we sat down together for her reveal.

Instead of choosing none, she found more than THIRTY images she wanted to consider, and left with seven portraits she loved enough to bring home…when she thought there would be none.

At one point, she said: “The experience was eye-opening. It was empowering. And I’m so glad I did it.”

One photoshoot didn’t magically erase every insecurity.

But sometimes seeing yourself through someone else’s eyes can soften the way you’ve been seeing yourself for years.

That’s what the 50 Over 50 Portrait Experience is really about for me.

Not perfection, or “fixing” years of self-talk.

Just giving women the chance to exist in beautiful photographs right now, instead of waiting for some future version of themselves.

Let me introduce you to Amy Hoehner 🤍

For years, Amy poured into everyone else—
her family, her career, her responsibilities.
