🍁 What a weekend! The 66th Annual Highland County Maple Festival got off to an overwhelming start — the crowds, the energy, and the community spirit were something else.

Weekend #2 is March 21 & 22, and the weather is looking beautiful. If you missed the first weekend, now is a great time to make it out to Virginia's Sweet Spot!

A big thank you to the Highland County Chamber of Commerce, all of the vendors, and every member of the Maple Festival Board and Planning Committee. You put together something really special.

It's been Allegheny Mountain Radio's pleasure to cover this festival over the years — this is exactly the kind of story we love to tell. We hope you enjoy the video, and if you spot someone you know, tag them and share! 🍁

The Trades Are Back: 50 Years of the Mertz Career and Technical Center

For decades, the message was clear: go to college, earn a degree, and build your future there.

But somewhere along the way, the country lost sight of something simpler — and essential.

We still need people who can fix what's broken.

This year, the Mertz Career and Technical Center at Bath County High School marks 50 years of preparing students for careers in the skilled trades — from automotive repair and carpentry to electrical work and beyond. It's a milestone worth celebrating. But it's also a story worth telling.

At the heart of it is Roy Burns — a man who spent 36 years as a mechanic before stepping into the classroom at a moment when the program needed someone to step up.

"I didn't want to see this program die."

Burns is quick to point out that he didn't make that transition alone. He credits Principal John Taylor and the vocational staff at Mertz with guiding him from the garage to the classroom — offering the kind of mentorship that made the shift not just possible, but meaningful. Taylor, he says, has built an environment where instructors are trusted to bring their real-world experience with them — giving them the flexibility to shape programs that reflect what students will actually face in the workforce.

And that matters more than ever.

Across the country, skilled trades are no longer overlooked — they're in demand. Mechanics, electricians, HVAC technicians, and other skilled workers are increasingly hard to find, even as the need continues to grow. Programs like Mertz are stepping into that gap, offering students hands-on training, real internship experience, and a direct path into careers that are both practical and essential.

The community will have a chance to see that work up close.

The 50th Anniversary Celebration begins Saturday, April 18th at 1 p.m. at Bath County High School — with tours, student demonstrations, historical displays, and a chance to reconnect with the people who have shaped the program across five decades.

But the bigger story goes beyond the celebration.

It's about how a community held onto something that nearly slipped away — and how that decision is quietly shaping the future of work.

I had the opportunity to sit down with DJ Willie to talk about the 24th Annual Bath Bluegrass Jamboree, coming up Saturday, April 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Bath County High School Auditorium.

This year’s lineup is strong. Nothin’ Fancy will headline the evening — one of the most respected names in bluegrass with more than three decades on the road and eleven albums to their name. Joining them are WoundTight, bringing traditional bluegrass with original material, and Franklin Station, opening the night with a mix of classic bluegrass, gospel, and country.

Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for ages 13–18, and free for children 12 and under.

The Bluegrass Jamboree has become one of Bath County’s largest annual gatherings and serves as the kickoff for the spring fundraiser for Allegheny Mountain Radio. Events like this help us cover local news, provide emergency information, local weather alerts, and community programming across the Allegheny Highlands.

In the interview, Willie talks about the history of the Jamboree, why this lineup matters, and what makes this event more than just a concert.

Take a few minutes to watch the video. We hope you’ll make plans to join us on April 11.

We held our 2026 Allegheny Mountain Radio Board of Directors and Members Annual Meeting today at the Pocahontas County Opera House. It was a strong afternoon. Honest conversation. Clear direction. Good fellowship.

To our community—thank you. The last few years haven’t been easy. You stayed with us. You gave. You listened. You encouraged us when it would’ve been simpler to tune out. That matters more than you know.

To our volunteers—this station runs because of you. Early shifts. Late drives. Equipment hiccups. Fundraisers. Ballgames. You’ve given your time and talent to keep us on the air, and you’ve done it without fanfare. That kind of commitment builds trust.

There’s momentum right now. New ideas. New programming. A few things we’ve been working on that you’ll see soon.

If you’ve stepped away for a while, this is a good time to come back to Allegheny Mountain Radio. We’re steady. We’re grateful. And we’re moving forward.

BATH COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL WAS THE EPICENTER OF REGION C WRESTLING THIS WEEKEND — AND THE CHARGERS SHOWED OUT.

Bath County finished 3rd out of 11 teams, our highest team finish in school history, and we’re sending 7 wrestlers to the State Tournament. After three weeks off the mat, there was a little rust early — but every single guy battled, and that’s what you love to see.

STATE QUALIFIERS (🎟️):
🎟️ Easton Roberts — 4th @ 120
🎟️ Jeremy Burns — 3rd @ 138
🎟️ Jesse Perry — 4th @ 144
🎟️ AJ Woodson — 4th @ 157
🎟️ Ethan Bryant — 2nd @ 165
🎟️ Azi Tyson — 4th @ 215
🎟️ Tyler Shaver — 2nd @ 285

OTHER CHARGERS WHO PLACED:
Zach Bryant — 6th @ 126
Harris Ellis — 5th @ 132
Gage Bryant — 5th @ 150

This also ties last season with 7 state qualifiers, and now it’s on to the next one. Plenty to tighten up this week, but the foundation is there — toughness, composure, and a team that’s peaking at the right time.

Way to go, Chargers. BC Proud.

Every now and then, a session brings things into perspective. This family had both come to The Homestead as kids—long before they knew each other—and they both remembered how beautifully it was decorated around the holidays. Now, for the first time, they’re bringing their own kids into that same tradition. It’s humbling to see how memory and place come full circle, and it’s a privilege to capture that moment.

A few weeks ago, I photographed Taylor and Erin’s engagement at the Omni Homestead. The evening before the shoot, they had a Signature Soak at the Historic Warm Springs Pools, Renee was their attendant.

I’m proud of the products we produce and the hospitality we share…. Taylor and Erin were Amazing.
