This is the first time I’ve had a bird of this size zooming past my head just feet away lol. It’s was such a great experience and really fun photographing them.

These mōlī have wingspans of 6 feet plus and use them to soar the coastlines or over the open ocean with very little effort. This shot was taken with my 500 mm. As you can see this mōlī was a bit too close to fit the length of its wingspan into frame, but I still think it makes for a unique shot as it focuses on its body in flight at eye level.

Built with patience. Guarded with devotion. 🤍
This mōlī nest represents one of the strongest commitments in the bird world. Nesting here in Hawaiʻi, mōlī parents lay a single egg and then take turns incubating it for about 65 days, often fasting for weeks at a time. After hatching, both parents will travel thousands of miles across the Pacific to bring food back to their chick—sometimes for more than 5 months before it’s ready to fly on its own.

Some mōlī pairs reunite with the same partner year after year, raising generation after generation on these islands. A powerful reminder that dedication, patience, and love can span oceans. 🌊🕊️

I just learned something new about the mōlī

At the time of these captures, I remember thinking to myself “which one is the pair” because there were three of them doing their little dance with each other? Well I’ve learned that single mōlī do Infact mingle with each other in search of their future mate. Shout out to for that bit of Info to clear up what it was I was witnessing.

I went on to read up a little more on this and found that the mōlī reach maturity at around 5-8 years of age, and would often return to the exact area where they hatched to find a mate. Pretty cool stuff.

Mōlī season in full swing. I’ll have more photos of my hike into Ka’ena soon.
