Waimoku Falls, 400ft (122m)

“He wai makamaka ‘ole.” (Water that recognizes no friend.) This describes a dangerous stream or waterfall.
The Hawaiian proverb is a warning to always be respectful of the power of natural forces. Flooded streams, waterfalls, and falling rocks will not stop for anything in their paths.
The beautiful sheer walls of these falls are shaped daily as water chips away one sharp stone after another to fall violently - and without warning - to the ground below.
Take photos, but from a safe distance.
Waimoku can mean water that cuts, severs, amputates, or breaks in two, as a stream often does after heavy rains. .photo

I went on a “little adventure” for my 48th Birthday! After driving a total of nine hours, forgetting to bring my hiking shoes, waiting four days for flood waters to subside , I was rewarded with a window of opportunity before the next flash flood would begin. I had my parents message me through satellite phone to warn me of stream levels rising. There is no trail and I waded through stream water Three feet deep and even deeper in other areas that I had to navigate through. I also heard large boulders falling from above and crashing on the boulders I was hoping on. Nature’s warning if you pay attention. A very special place that demands respect. .photo

I've decided to start bringing my Nikon out on more hikes. I saw this plumeria flower laying perfectly on a rock at the start of my hike today. Elevation gain was just over 2800ft or 853m, I didn't make it to the top of the mountain due to my late start but I did go further than expected.

I had Kalalau Valley all to myself or so I thought I did. I left my camp shortly after 8AM to explore the Valley. Quickly realizing that the trail was severely damaged by wild boar. Then realizing I was lost back there. It was not a bad place to get lost. Streams were everywhere. The multiple streams made everything even more confusing than it already was. Hiking at the base of these fluted cliffs, I came across mini waterfalls and terraced land, dating back centuries as I slowly made my way to the back of the Valley. Eventually, I would be able to go no further than straight up the cliff walls. A perfect place to turn around and try to retrace my steps back but I got lost again. Still not a bad place to get lost. I had several days to find my way back if needed, food and plenty of water. Pools or ponds to swim in every step of the way. Massive guava trees at old home sites. My hiking experience paid off and I managed to find my way back to the main trail that was still intact. The Valley trail is shaped like a lollipop. 🍭 You hike mostly a straight route with an option of making a loop. Check out my track in the comments below…

Maybe not let it kill you but be so passionate about it that you are willing to hike one of the hikes listed on the Top 10 Most Beautiful & Deadly Hikes in the World and capture an image most people will never be able to. The planning alone, would make most give up even before starting. I had a five day permit so I could increase my chances having clear skies. My first night had cloud cover and light rain. My second night as seen in the photo had the clearest sky imaginible. No light pollution except from the moon and stars. You could see the Milky Way and Dark Horse Nebula with just the naked eye. The camera’s iso and exposure would just make everything easier to see. The setting moon would illuminate the mountains majestically. My camp neighbors were feeling a little uneasy when I was out lurking around. What was I up to as they lied down for bed and I began to star gaze. Which is your favorite photo? The lower iso with realistic black sky or the higher iso image with a blue sky?
