50 year anniversary of the maiden voyage of Hōkūleʻa.

In July of 1976, I was an artist selling my paintings every weekend at the Honolulu Zoo Fence. A couple of years earlier I had purchased my first “professional” camera, a Minolta SRT101, to shoot local landscape and sailing pictures that I could use as reference images for my paintings. As I was actively producing a growing collection of sailing images, the Waikiki Yacht Club, would occasionally ask me to take photos for their Club magazine, “The Windward Beat”. July 26, 1976, exactly 50 years ago, was one of those times. The club had secured a spot for me on a boat that was going to Diamond Head where I would be able to photograph the historic homecoming of the double hulled, Polynesian sailing canoe, Hōkūleʻa.
The 61’ vessel, built on the Windward Side of Oahu in 1975, had recently completed her first long distance voyage to Tahiti. During the 2,700 mile trip, the crew only relied on traditional, non-instrument, navigation techniques. The voyage proved the long debated claim that the early Polynesian voyagers were in fact, able to purposely sail great distances, to intended destinations over open ocean. And they did it hundreds of years before the birth of Columbus and the invention of navigational instruments. Their return to Honolulu marked the completion of Hōkūleʻa's maiden voyage to Tahiti and back.
I consider myself very fortunate to have been one of the thousands of spectators at Diamond Head that day, and then to experience her final arrival at Magic Island where thousands more were waiting to welcome the crew home.

When I was sailing on Lake Erie as a teenager in the late 60s, Bay Week, at Put In Bay, was THE place to be every summer. Glad to hear it is still going on, with the 2026 races scheduled for July 31 to August 2nd.

MIGHTY MARY during a pre-start, 1995 America's Cup Defense Trials, San Diego. Phil Uhl Photo
Congratulations! and best of luck to Mary Mazzio and the 50 eggs production crew on the completion of "MIGHTY MARY". The film, which will have it's first public screening during the Nantucket Film festival on Thursday, June 18th, tells the story of the America 3 Women's Team that Bill Koch put together for the defense of 1995 America's Cup. Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it to the East Coast to see the film and all of my former team mates, but maybe someone will put together something in San Diego.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU ! We Did it, not only did this nearly 50 year old TRANSPAC photo win the Peoples Vote Award, it also won the GOLD (first in class to you sailors) AWARD, in the EVENT category. Since this was an international Black & White (not sailing) photo competition, with entries from 82 countries and and international jury, it is a great indicator of the interest and perception of the beauty of our sport by the general public.

In 2005 The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, held a three month exhibition of Bill Koch’s fine art collection. In addition, the exhibition featured a large screen video that ran non stop, featuring A3 programs that I had created in San Diego, as well as the 1992 America’s Cup Race competitors displayed on the front lawn. Defender, America 3 (USA) and Challenger, Il Morro Di Venezia (ITALY)
