I got to meet Rob at Airventure a few years back. He was so kind and took a few minutes to chat and signed a card for me - a card which I kept in the sleeve of my headset bag for years.

There are many amazing aviators out there, and many great performers. In my eyes, Rob was the best of both. His performances were awe-inspiring, and I’ll never forget them.

Thanks Rob, blue skies

The P-51B “Little Ambassador” made Major James Empey an Ace before he was even old enough to vote. After WWII Empey would go on to test pilot school and earn a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Oklahoma State University. He volunteered to be sent to Vietnam because “too many 18-year-olds and 19-year-olds were coming home in body bags,” and earned the name “Red Baron” because he would still fly in his leather helmet, white scarf, and goggles.

James Empey would retire from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel, being awarded the Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying crosses, and 27 air medals. He passed in 2013 at the age of 89.

The mighty Mudhen from the 307th Fighter Squadron “Stingers” visiting Airventure 2019. The F-15E Strike Eagle is nicknamed the Mudhen because of its primary air-to-ground role (mud) and its canoe shaped conformal fuel tanks on the side of each intake (hen). With its conformal fuel tanks and 3 external fuel tanks, the Mudhen can carry about 35,000lbs of fuel - more than an F-16 weighs by itself.

The fight for Britain’s skies cemented this exceptional interceptor in the hearts and minds of its people. The Supermarine Spitfire entered service in 1938 with the Royal Air Force, and in July 1940 fought alongside the longer serving Hawker Hurricane. Although the Hurricane was used in larger numbers and claimed 70% of air-to-air kills in the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire proved itself as a phenomenally handling aircraft and a promising platform for the future. The Spitfire stood the test of time being the only British fighter to be produced before, during, and after WWII.

With over 20,000 produced, around 60 remain airworthy in private collections today. This Spitfire Mk.IX is owned and operated by the Texas Flying Legends Museum and is seen here at EAA Airventure 2019. MK959 is a true D-Day survivor as well.

From the website: “The CAF Red Tail Squadron’s P-51C Mustang, named Tuskegee Airmen, is an authentic and fully restored operational fighter from the WWII era. This awe-inspiring aircraft sparks conversations to educate young and old alike about the often-overlooked history of the Tuskegee Airmen that flew this same model as their signature aircraft in WWII. It is quite simply a museum without walls… and an awe inspiring one at that!

Our P-51C Mustang Tuskegee Airmen, tail number N61429, saw service stateside as a trainer in 1945, then declared surplus after the war ended. It was displayed at Montana State College (now Montana State University) for 40 years before being donated for restoration. The CAF took possession of the aircraft in the late 1980s, and was initially restored to flying condition in 2001.”
