90 years of Madre. 🤍
Some people become family because you marry into them, and some people become family because they choose to love you as their own. Madre has done both for me.
Growing up, I never really had the close relationship with my grandparents that I always wished I did. They lived far enough away that we mostly saw each other on holidays, with the occasional summer visit, and I think there was always a little part of me that wondered what it would have been like to have a grandmother close by...the kind you visit just because, who teaches you things, asks where you've been when she hasn't seen you, and makes sure you know you belong.
I didn't realize I would find that relationship later in life with my husband's grandmother.
Madre helped raise Jesse, so I already knew how important she was to him. But over the years, she became incredibly important to me, too.
We don't even speak the same language very well. She speaks mostly Spanish, I speak English, and somehow that has never stopped us from understanding the things that actually matter.
I know she loves me.
She calls me her granddaughter. She asks about me when she hasn't seen me. She has taught me how to make her albóndigas. We share a love of flowers. And through all these years, she has always made me feel like I belong to her family, not because she has to, but because she decided that I do.
There are probably no words for how much that acceptance has meant to me.
Madre gave me a relationship I didn't even realize I was still longing for. She gave me a grandmother to love, and she allowed me to be her granddaughter in return. That is something I will never take for granted.
These are Madre's 90th birthday portraits, and when I started thinking about how I wanted to photograph her, I knew I didn't want a fancy backdrop or anything that felt like it was trying to make her into something she's not. I wanted to capture the essence of how I see her. I wanted these photographs to feel like HER.
I was so honored to see them displayed at her 90th birthday party, surrounded by the people who came together to celebrate 90 years of her life. But if I'm being a little selfish, I also took these photographs for me.
Because I know there will come a day when we don't have her anymore.
And when that day comes, these are the photographs I know I will come back to. This is how I will remember her. The way I see her right now. The face I know, the smile I love, and the woman who made room in her life and her heart for me and called me her granddaughter.
Getting to celebrate 90 years of her life and having the privilege of documenting this season of her life for our family and for myself, is something I will treasure forever.
Happy 90th birthday, Madre. I hope you know just how deeply you are loved, and how incredibly grateful I am that I get to call you mine. 🤍
90 años de Madre. 🤍
