Using Photojournalism to Fight Hate pt. 2
The # may have disappeared from your timeline, but the BLM movement continues to push for justice across the US.
[Why create this Photography Book?]
Basically, because I'm black. And I believe that Blacks should write their own narratives and tell their own stories. I’m a firm believer in storytelling and sharing Black stories as authentically as possible. I think that if black people step up and share their story, it would be hard for anyone else to change our narratives
I think it's important that this particular moment in history be preserved, just like the Civil Rights Movement (CRM) was preserved. I think it's paramount, that this time, all of the stories come from Black people who are affected by white supremacy and patriarchy and racism. Black voices. Not just Black voices that are celebrities or celebrity-ish
[How does this current movement parallel the CRM?]
Because it's a pivotal moment in this country's history. I think Black voices and Black people are often seen, but not really heard. And when they are heard, it's usually from a white lens or a white filter to where it's safe. And it's digestible for other people
But our struggle has never been safe for us. It's never been digestible for us, and it shouldn't be made to be palatable for anyone else
I think it should be told transparently and truthfully; I think we should hear from Black women, from Black trans men and women, and from black men, period, in their own words. I think it's very important because this is our CRM
This is our turning point, this is our Montgomery Bus Boycott. This is Blacks standing up more and more saying, “You know, enough is enough.”
It parallels the CRM in ways that Blacks are now standing up unapologetically against State sanctioned violence against us. Like then, Blacks are willing to put their bodies on the line for our ultimate freedom and liberation. It parallels the CRM in terms of unity and sacrifice. Knowing that when we stand together, when we fight together, we win together, not just for Black people but for everyone’
