Art of the Photo

Art of the Photo Blurring the lines between traditional art and photography. Most of the photos are mine, if they aren't mine I will always give credit.

I use various mediums to bring my artistic vision to life and create the images I want to see in the world. My work blurs the lines between traditional art and photography. I use various mediums, though primarily Photoshop, to bring my artistic vision to life and create the images I want to see in the world. All of the photos are mine, and I will generally show the unedited version in the comments.

Steamboat Josephine
I always wish I could have seen the Steamboats on the Upper Missouri.

I enhanced and colorized the original black and white version. The second photo was taken by an unknown photographer on the Upper Missouri River around 1880.

The air over Havre was thick and grey, not with dust or rain, but with the old, pale light that holds a town’s whole history—the sweat and the money and the long, bitter cold. Against that sky, two structures once rose, taller than the town itself: the grain elevators. For a hundred years they had stood, the twin fists of labor and profit, built by men with cracked hands, paid for by the bushel. They were the monuments to the grain, to the prairie's fierce bounty, and to the faith that the harvest would always come.

Now they are gone.

A great, clean hole is left in the sky where the industry had been. The steel was cut away, the concrete crumbled, and the dust of a century of work was blown into the weeds. The two tall places, which were the compass and the clock for every man who worked that land, are simply not there. The view is empty now, and it is a thing of simple terror, for when the shape of your work is removed from the sky, a piece of the working man's soul is removed with it. The great, impersonal Company that tore them down felt no sadness, and the new flat skyline offers no promise. It offers only space, cold and open, like a hand that has dropped its tools for the last time.
