A few things that make shoot day faster, and the photos better. Turn on every lamp before we start; half-lit rooms read cold on camera. Clear the counters and smooth the beds, the camera finds every bit of clutter. Put away anything that doesn't match the season outside. Handle that much and we'll take it from there. A few things worth knowing before your trip. The bedrock under every trail is Black Hand sandstone, carved by meltwater after the last ice age. The cool gorges hold eastern hemlock, a holdover from a colder climate. One cave here is a true tunnel through the cliff face. Some gorges rise nearly 200 feet deep. Even the name comes from the river: Hockhocking, often translated as bottle river. We're out here most weeks of the year.
