He found beauty in the prosaic: bars, phone booths, hamburger joints, barber shops — first in a downtrodden Paterson, then throughout the state and beyond.

The truth is, the cameras we already own have more features than we’ll ever use and produce better image quality than most of us are ever likely to need.

In 1975, the renowned photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson received an invitation to travel from Paris to America for what would become one of his final photographic projects. His images would be used in “Assignment America,” a television show on the public-broadcasting station WNET. Choose any subject, anywhere, he was told. His choice? New Jersey. Cartier-Bresson felt that New Jersey’s anywhere-ness, its density and diversity, was “a kind of shortcut through America.” The photographer and his assistant visited suburban sprawl, horse country, pine barrens, swamps, seashore, beauty parlors, labs, nuclear facilities, jails, and mansions. After Cartier-Bresson returned to Paris, a WNET director cropped the photos to fit a TV screen—a practice the photographer viewed as sacrilege. The episode aired, but the project was effectively excluded from catalogues of the Cartier-Bresson’s work. Simple photographs of familiar moments.

The photographer Deanna Dikeman’s parents always stood outside to send her off after a visit, waving or standing in the driveway while she got in her car and drove away. One day in 1991, she thought to photograph them in this pose, and for more than 20 years, she continued the practice—photographing her parents at the same moment, rolling down her car window and aiming her lens toward their home.
