Fall calendar is opening in 3 days - did you know the best time for these golden hues is 2 hours before sunset?
In Chicago that may mean we keep the kids up a little longer than bedtime for the younger ones. But those can also make for some really adorable cuddly time.

There’s something that most families get wrong when it comes to family photo day that is probably not what you’d expect me to say. Especially coming from a photographer with almost 20 years in the game.

No, it’s not matching outfits, or the good ol’ “say cheese” or bribery.

Although bribery actually works sometimes too.

If you want to know EVERY trick up my sleeve, tip/trick to knowing how to get husbands, teenagers and toddlers to all participate and have fun, and even my wardrobe style boards and locations then you should comment FALL and over this next month, I’ll send you ALL of that…

But the thing that most families get wrong is that they think they are documenting the family for “just one shot” … but you’re not.

Your family photos actually have MEMORIES inside of the photograph. Have a horrible photoshoot but get the “one shot” where everyone looks decent… and hang that on your wall… and everyone will forever talk about a negative experience that day was.

Use all of my secrets and tricks… have such an incredible experience… and hang THAT on your walls… and guess what… every-time your kids, husband, or family walks by that photo… they’ll feel love, happiness and belonging.

Your photos matter for documenting the moment… but the moment behind the photo matters more.

Real talk for a second.

You have been carrying the baby, the mental load, the birth plan, the registry, the feeding schedule research, the “what if I’m doing this wrong” anxiety at 3am, and the emotional weight of becoming a completely different version of yourself — all at the same time.

You are literally growing a human and also managing everything else in your entire life. And you are doing it while your body is doing the most extreme thing it has ever done and people keep asking if you’ve picked a name yet like that’s the pressing issue right now.

So here’s what I want for you. Just one thing, one afternoon, where absolutely none of that is your problem.

I handle the wardrobe. I handle the hair and makeup. I handle where to stand, what to do with your hands, when to look at the camera and when to look away. I handle the light and the timing and the direction and the whole entire thing.

You handle showing up.

That’s it. That is your one job. Walk through the door. The rest is mine.

And what comes out the other side of that one afternoon in Chicago — a woman who was finally, completely, unapologetically taken care of for a few hours — those photos look different. They feel different. Because she’s in them differently.

Not performing. Not managing. Just being.

That’s the most beautiful version of any photo I’ve ever taken.

Strong is carrying the baby. Stronger is knowing when to let someone else carry the rest — even if just for one afternoon.

I’d be honored to be your one afternoon.
