Kazakh Eagle Hunters in Western Mongolia. The Kazakhs are semi-nomadic people and have live around Altai Mountains in Western Mongolia with their herds since 19th century. There are about 87,000 Kazakhs in Mongolia (4% of Mongolia population) and an estimated of 250 eagle hunters. Various animals are hunted for their fur, including rabbits, marmots, foxes and wolves. The skill of training golden eagles is passed on through generations. Only young female golden eagles are trained as they are larger and more powerful and aggressive than the males, with a wingspan of 2.5m (8ft) and weighing up to 7kg (15lbs) when fully grown!

Sunset in Faroe Islands. Although Faroe Islands are a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark rather than a sovereign state, they rank first in the world for Nobel laureates per capita, with approximately 202 laureates per 10 million inhabitants. With a population of only about 55,000 people, Faroe Islands have produced 1 Nobel laureate, Niels Ryberg Finsen, who received the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. By comparison, United States ranks 15th in Nobel laureates per capita, with approximately 11.7 laureates per 10 million people, based on 383 Nobel laureates among a population of about 327 million.

Aurora borealis gracing the skies of Northern Norway. For millennia, the enigmatic phenomenon of the Northern Lights puzzled humanity, eluding clear understanding of its origins. Aristotle, in the 4th century BCE, provided the earliest known scientific observation, likening the aurora to flames of burning gas. However, it wasn’t until the early 20th century that Norwegian professor Kristian Birkeland (1867–1917) became the pioneer in recognizing the connection between the Northern Lights and electromagnetic storms originating from the sun. Join us for the Lofoten Winter Aurora Photo Workshop in 2027.

Cypress Swamp in Texas. Swamps are vital ecosystems that play a crucial role in maintaining environmental balance. They absorb excess water and help moderate flooding, protecting nearby cities from storm surges. At the same time, they act as natural filters, purifying water by trapping and breaking down wastes and chemicals from human activities. Substances that aren’t absorbed by plants gradually settle into the sediment and sand over time, further cleansing the water that flows through these wetlands.

For the Tsaatan reindeer herder, the teepee, known as an ortz, is far more than a shelter. It is a symbol of movement, resilience, and harmony with nature. Built from slender wooden poles and wrapped in canvas, the ortz can be assembled or taken down in just a few hours, allowing families to migrate easily with their reindeer as the seasons change. Inside, life unfolds around a small central stove, where warmth, cooking, and storytelling come together during long winter nights. The smoke hole above is both practical and symbolic, opening the home to the sky, spirits, and ancestors. Each camp is temporary by design; when pasture thins, they quietly pack their homes, leaving almost no trace behind. In this way, the teepee reflects the Tsaatan worldview: take only what is needed, move gently across the land, and live in balance with the forest and the reindeer that sustain life.

If you have ever imagined stepping into a frozen fairy tale, take a walk through a tykky forest of Finland Lapland. Tykky is the Finnish term for trees completely encased in frost and snow during winter, and the result is nothing short of extraordinary. These forests become nature’s own sculpture gardens, where every tree is transformed into a work of art. Lapland’s dominant trees, Scots pine, Norway spruce, and birch, have developed remarkable adaptations to survive these conditions. Their flexible branches bend beneath the immense weight of snow and ice, sometimes carrying more than 500 kilograms, rather than breaking. The frost itself acts as a natural insulating coat, protecting the trees from sub-zero temperatures and relentless Arctic winds.

Watching penguins may not be as romantic as you imagine. Most species don’t live on pristine ice fields, they often nest on rocky shores, surrounded by pink or brown-stained ground. And no, that’s not mud, it’s penguin guano. While it may seem unpleasant, penguin guano plays an important role in both their ecology and scientific research. Gentoo penguins, like those in this image, can even use their guano to help melt snow at their breeding sites, exposing suitable ground for nesting. Their guano also reveals what they eat. The pink or brown coloration comes from carotenoids found in the shells of krill, one of their primary food sources. On a larger scale, these guano stains are so prominent that scientists can identify penguin colonies from space, using satellite imagery to track population distribution and changes over time.

The Yuanyang Rice Terraces, located in Yunnan Province of China, are one of the world’s most extraordinary examples of harmony between people and nature. For over a thousand years, the Hani people, an ethnic minority native to this region, have carefully carved vast layers of rice terraces into the steep mountainsides rising above 2,000 meters. Following the contours of the cliffs, these terraces cascade like giant stairways across the landscape, with more than 3,000 levels in total. Often described as a breathtaking “land sculpture,” the Yuanyang Rice Terraces earning recognition as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site. Join Ian Plant Ian Plant Photography and me Kah-Wai Lin Photography for an unforgettable adventure to the Yuanyang Rice Terraces and Zhangjiajie Mountains this coming December!
