This morning’s wildlife photography session turned unexpectedly operatic. I showed up expecting to capture some little owl behavior… you know, some wing flapping, a little branching, a sleepy blink or two. Instead, this baby Great Horned Owl apparently decided today was his audition for "The Grand Ol' Owlprey."

There he was… chest puffed out… eyes wide… singing what I can only assume was a heartfelt rendition of “O Sole Miooooo!” from the top of the cottonwood tree. Loud. Passionate. Dramatic. He is completely committed to the performance.

Meanwhile, mom is sitting behind him looking exactly like every exhausted parent who just wants ONE MORE HOUR OF SLEEP. You can almost hear her thinking: “For the love of all woodland creatures… the sun isn’t even fully up yet.”

Yes, nature has a funny way of reminding us that life isn’t always polished or graceful. Sometimes it’s just a fluffy kid screaming Italian opera at 7:30 in the morning while his mother questions every life decision that led to this moment.

One thing I’ve learned from watching wildlife over the years is this: every family, whether human or feathered, has that one youngster who wakes up way too motivated while everybody else is still trying to function. 😄🦉

I’ve noticed something over the years… every time I spend real, quiet time observing wildlife, I walk away learning something about how we might live our own lives a little better.

These two up here in the nest gave me one of those reminders.

When I first watched them, it looked like they were just messing around, flapping their wings, bumping into each other, getting their footing. But the longer I stayed with them, the more I realized… they are not playing. They are preparing. They are quietly getting ready for a moment that’s coming whether they feel ready or not.

And nobody’s coaching them. They did not read my book Unshackled. Thye do not have a timeline or a checklist. There’s no perfect set of conditions. There’s just something inside them saying, “It’s time to start figuring this out.”

That got me thinking about us.

How often do we wait for the perfect moment? The right circumstances? Someone to tell us we’re ready? Meanwhile, life is nudging us the same way… you know, those little moments that say, “Do it. Go for it. Jump in with both feet. You’re closer than you think.”

You see, if we slow down enough, wildlife, in fact all of nature speaks to us. Sure, nature does not use words, it speaks to us through moments like this… if we’re willing to pay attention.

What I see here isn’t just two owlets in a nest. I see the early stages of courage. I see the beginning of independence. I see the quiet, unglamorous work that comes before something extraordinary.

And I can’t help but wonder… where in our own lives are we still standing in the nest, waiting, when maybe it’s time to start flapping our wings with more intention?

It does not have to be perfect. It does not have to be all at once. But perhaps...just enough to begin.

There’s something about a flower after the rain… it didn’t avoid the storm, it went through it. Every drop, every gust, every moment that could’ve broken it… and yet here it is, more vibrant, more alive, almost like the rain revealed something that was already inside.

Yet, we don’t always give ourselves that same grace. We think the struggle disqualifies us… when in reality, it shapes us. The hard conversations, the quiet battles no one sees, the days you had to show up without feeling ready, that’s not weakness. That’s you evolving.

Maybe the reason you’re still here… still standing… still becoming… is because there’s something rare in you that only adversity could bring out. So if today feels heavy, take a breath and remember this: You’re not broken, and you certainly don;t need fixing.

You’re in bloom… just in a way the world hasn’t fully seen yet.

I almost didn’t go out. It was one of those Sunday evenings where I think to myself, you tell yourself you’ve done enough for the week… I've already captured a newsworthy Osprey rescue story, I will just stay home.

But something nudged me to get up and head out anyway. So I pull into a quiet area. The kind of place you drive past a hundred times and never think twice about it. I wasn’t expecting much... and then...

At first, just one small face.

Then another.

And within a few minutes, I’m standing there watching a vixen and her five kits, right there, in the middle of our lives. No wilderness backdrop. Just life… in all of its glory.

The kits did what kids do. Wrestling, chasing, climbing over each other without a care in the world. And mom? She was calm, alert, and ever so watchful with those piercing eyes of hers.

One of the most powerful moments is when a kit reached up to her, as if to say "thank you, for all you do." Simple. Unscripted. A Universal moment. And I’m standing there in awe capturing this scene thinking… this is what it means to be a human. Not just for the photo. The photos are great. But what matters more is the experience.

Right now, everyone’s talking about AI. What it can do. What it might replace. Whether it’s going to take over this or that. And don’t get me wrong, it’s powerful. I use it. I respect it. And through my law firm, I am working to make it safer.

But standing there last night, watching that mother and her kits… there’s something AI will never touch. Sure, it can generate an image of a fox. And most certainly, it can write a story about a fox.

But AI can’t give you that moment when you’re standing there, heart slows down a bit and you realize you’re witnessing something indescribable. A feeling, a connection. The awareness that life is happening all around us whether we pay attention or not.

That cannot be replaced. That’s something you have to go out and experience.

And last night… I’m glad I did.

I spent several hours outside early Tuesday morning photographing the March 3rd lunar eclipse.

The color during totality was indescribable; that deep copper tone caused by sunlight refracting through Earth’s atmosphere and lighting the moon from behind our planet’s shadow.

This frame was taken hand-held at 2000mm with the Nikon P950. After processing, I focused on bringing out crater detail while preserving the natural eclipse color.

One of the things I love about photographing eclipses is how slowly the moment unfolds. It forces you to slow down, watch the sky, and wait for the right frame.

Hand-held at 2000 mm...and definitely worth the lost sleep!

This is a Northern Flicker, looking like it just escaped from the special effects department. He is technically a woodpecker, but emotionally? He is a fighter jet with feathers.

And the best part? He weighs about as much as a stick of butter.
Nature is unbelievable!

Artificial Intelligence is a wonderful tool. A technology that can and will facilitate our manner of being and doing in many ways. Many folks--chief among them the artistic community -- are afraid that AI will replace them completely. I disagree. Here is an image that I captured last Saturday morning at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver, Colorado. Yes, I ran it through a denoise program and brightened the colors just a tiny bit. Nothing, nothing, nothing, can compete with or replace Mother Nature. So get out there, do your thing, create your music, your movies, your dance, your art, your photos -- because life is here to stay! , , , ,
