I read a quote on Facebook in regards to photographers putting their logo on their images. It was from a gentleman who thought watermarks were ridiculous. I believe the word used to describe the practice was “arrogance” with the watermarks being likened to graffiti.
So, I thought about this, ‘cause that’s what I do.
And I pondered whether the inclusion of an artist’s mark upon the work they created was arrogant. And while I pondered, I wandered. And as I was pondering and wandering, I wandered into Barnes and Noble. And as I perused the shelves lined with beautiful paper books, I noticed something:
All of the books featured the author’s name on the cover and...wait for it..on the spine.
Those arrogant authors.
And then I pondered and wandered some more, right into the mall. And as I visited stores with beautiful clothing, I noticed something: many of the clothes had the designer’s name or logo on the clothing.
Those arrogant designers.
And then I got a coffee, you know, ‘cause pondering and wandering is exhausting, and sure enough, when handed my cup, I saw the name of the coffee shop..wait for it again...ON THE CUP.
Those arrogant business owners.
And then I ceased pondering and wandering. And realized what I’ve known all along: that when you create something, you put your name on it.
It’s not called arrogance...it’s called common sense.
And it’s the mark of a proud artist.
