WOMAN FIRED AFTER CLOCKING IN FROM A BEACH THREE STATES AWAY FOR FOUR MONTHS WITHOUT ANYONE NOTICING

Atlanta, GA -- A 46-year-old Atlanta woman is facing termination and potential fraud charges after her employer discovered she had been logging into company systems, attending virtual meetings, and submitting weekly reports from a beach rental in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida for four consecutive months while her colleagues believed she was working from her home office twelve minutes away.
She was not twelve minutes away. She was across three state lines with her toes in the sand and her camera strategically aimed at a plain beige wall.
Michelle Carver, 46, told investigators it started as a long weekend in late June. The weather was good. The rental was affordable. Her laptop worked fine. She attended Monday's standup from the back porch and nobody said anything. So she stayed.
According to the HR termination filing the four month operation included:

Eighty seven virtual meetings attended with camera on and background carefully controlled
A plain beige shower curtain hung behind her desk chair to replicate her home office wall
All emails, reports, and deadlines submitted on time without a single missed deliverable
Two team happy hours attended via Zoom from a beachside tiki bar she described as having excellent wifi
One all-hands presentation delivered while sitting on a paddleboard in a sheltered cove she described as remarkably stable

Michelle maintained full productivity throughout. Her performance reviews during the period were described as strong. Her manager told HR she had seemed more relaxed lately and had assumed it was the meditation app the company had gifted staff in April.
It was not the meditation app.
She was discovered in October when a colleague sent a surprise DoorDash gift card to her home address as a work anniversary gesture and the neighbor who signed for it mentioned Michelle had not been home since June.
Michelle told HR the arrangement proved remote work could function anywhere and offered to submit her four month performance data as supporting evidence.
HR did not accept the evidence. The beige shower curtain is still at the rental. Michelle has a tan that her termination paperwork cannot explain.
