For our project with support from Arts Culture Catawba, we chose the use of a sheer fabric for art and poetry that would move in the wind, allow the brick to show through and that reflected the natural world in our little urban environment. The piece is influenced by Tibetan prayer flags traditionally used to be blown by the wind to spread goodwill, wisdom, and blessings to all space and beings. The wind and the sun have been interacting with the piece for over a year.
The final poem for the wall is wishing by N.C. Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green. A storm arrived the day after we installed it. The next day the wind split the fabric to reveal more of the poem, blew a section to the roof and then draped a piece back down to catch in the pyracantha. We are contemplating our next move with this piece, but for now Jaki Shelton Green’s poem is holding it’s own with it’s powerful message as strong as the wind. There just might be another poem in there.
Many thanks for the support of Arts Culture Catawba, Bowman Roofing, Marin Fanjoy-Labrenz, and especially Ada LimĂłn, Scott Owens, Narya Rose Deckard and Jaki Shelton Green.
