✨ Understanding Photography Styles: Editorial • Candid • Documentary ✨
As a photographer, one of the most common questions I get is about the difference between photography styles. While all three approaches capture real moments, the way those moments are created and documented can feel very different. Here’s a little guide to help you understand what each style means — and which might resonate most with you.
EDITORIAL
Editorial photography is inspired by magazine-style imagery — polished, intentional, and visually striking. I’ll guide you through posing, angles, and expression to create images that feel elevated and artistic while still reflecting who you are. This approach focuses on storytelling through composition, styling, and mood. Think dramatic light, refined posing, and images that look like they belong in print.
CANDID
Candid photography sits beautifully between posed and completely unposed. I gently guide you into natural interactions — walking together, laughing, talking, or simple prompts that spark real emotion. The goal isn’t stiff posing, but authentic connection. These images feel relaxed, emotional, and true to you, while still benefiting from subtle direction so you never feel awkward.
DOCUMENTARY
Documentary photography is the most raw and observational approach. I step back and capture events exactly as they unfold with minimal direction or interruption. These are the quiet glances, spontaneous laughter, happy tears, and fleeting moments you may not even realize are happening. It’s honest storytelling — unfiltered and beautifully real.
