You don’t need an exotic location, perfect weather, or expensive props to give yourself a worthwhile photography challenge.

There are probably 20 good photo projects sitting within a few metres of you right now.

Try window-light still life, kitchen reflections, water-drop close-ups, shadow patterns, backlit objects, a tiny toy scene, light painting, colour themes or even a simple floating-object illusion. The point isn’t necessarily to create a masterpiece. It’s to give yourself a reason to pick up the camera and deliberately practise light, composition and technique.

I particularly like the “before-and-after setup challenge” — photograph the same ordinary object several different ways and see just how dramatically lighting, background and camera angle change the result.

If you had to choose just one of these 20 projects to photograph today, which number would you pick?

📸 MEET THE SHUTTERBUGS: MIKE McFARLAND 🦌🌿

We’re excited to introduce you to Mike Mcfarland, a self-taught photographer who has been capturing the beauty of the natural world for more than seven years! 📷

Mike’s love of photography began while living in California, where he discovered there was so much to photograph. Today, his favorite subject remains nature, inspired by his love of animals and the incredible beauty found all around us. 🌎🦋🌳

His photography style continues to expand as he discovers new aspects of nature, and he especially enjoys capturing candid moments rather than carefully planned shots. Mike photographs with a Canon R5 and a variety of lenses and is currently learning Lightroom to further develop his editing skills.

When asked where he finds inspiration, Mike’s answer is simple: peace and quiet while in nature. His hope is that viewers feel a greater appreciation for the natural world when they see his photographs. ❤️

Mike discovered the Art Center Shutterbugs through the local newspaper and says being part of the group gives him the opportunity to learn from other photographers. Workshops, field trips and guest speakers have all helped him continue to grow.

🌟 A fun fact about Mike: He has lived in more than a dozen cities across the lower 48 states while managing construction projects!

And his dream photography destination? Yellowstone! 🏔️🐻

One thing you’ll always find beside Mike while he edits his photos: a nice glass of water! 💧😊

Join us in welcoming Mike and getting to know another member of the Art Center Shutterbugs community!

📸🌿 Meet Lenore Hotchkiss – Art Center Shutterbugs Member Spotlight! 🌿📸

With 50 years behind the camera, Lenore Hotchkiss brings a lifelong love of art and a deep appreciation for the natural world to her photography. A self-taught photographer, Lenore enjoys capturing nature and the beauty found everywhere outdoors. Her goal is simple but meaningful: she hopes her photographs inspire viewers to pause and develop a greater appreciation for nature. 🌳🦋

Lenore photographs with Canon equipment and enjoys a combination of planning her shots and capturing those unexpected moments. One of her most meaningful photographs is of a baby fawn in Colorado walking toward her with a curious look—a beautiful moment of connection with the natural world. 🦌❤️

A longtime member of the Art Center, Lenore joined Art Center Shutterbugs last year. For her, being part of the photography community is all about sharing. She says the club’s workshops, field trips, and guest speakers have all been beneficial to her photography journey.

She is currently working on a photography series called “Off The Dock.” And here’s an interesting fact: Lenore is a Florida Master Naturalist! 🌿

Her dream photography destinations? She has already checked them off her list—Tanzania and Kenya! 🌍📷

And when she’s editing? Coffee, of course! ☕📸
