Song Dog Journal - Blog and Photography Photographer and writer in the Black Hills. Welcome to Song Dog Photography! The interest didn't particularly explode until we moved to South Dakota.

I have dabbled in photography since I was a kid, thanks to my Dad, who started me taking black and white photos on his 35mm camera when I was 12 or so. A whole new world of photography opened up to me when I began writing my blog, Homestead Diaries, and purchasing my first DSLR opened the door even further. I've been engrossed and fascinated ever since. That interest has grown to include landscape and still life, "daily life photojournalism," and portrait photography.

Photographers develop a style that personally resonates with them. Makes sense, right? My style is the style I personally find beautiful and pleasing. So naturally I love to be able to shoot my own family photos. In moments of free time the last few days, I've been finalizing my print order, to get some of our photos framed and up on our walls - Which is the goal, after all. Digital images are great, but the goal is print, and daily enjoyment.

As a photographer, I enjoy being able to visualize an idea and bring it to life…These are a couple of the maternity pictures I took last summer when we were in the Bighorns, followed by the recreation of them this summer. Heart full last year. Arms full this year. Life can change so fast, and in such good ways.

As an aside, self portraits are a great way to hone one’s photography skills, and are a great reminder of what it feels like to be in front of the camera!

Family pictures take effort. I almost talked myself out of doing these. I'm so glad I didn't listen.

It is family photo season! Including for photographers. :) We took a quick getaway to the Bighorns over the weekend, so with the help of a remote shutter we got a few family pictures in the aspens.

Fall gets so busy so fast. And maybe I'm a little biased, but family photos are just so special.
