Have you heard about shifting your brain out of "spotlight" into "lantern" mode in order to enter a more creative state of consciousness? This is what I try to turn on the moment I am walking out into the shoot location with my family. Spotlight mode illuminates one thing in front of us, enabling us adults to get things done very efficiently, while leaving everything else in the shadow. Lantern mode however illuminates all the glorious details of everything around us all at once. It's like being a kid who finds every little thing fascinating while taking a walk outside. And so as I am shooting, I am constantly scanning the environment beyond the big story in front of me and noticing the micro stories, the layered stories, the details, the potential compositions, etc. This is why I love shooting at new locations (bc everything is exciting and new!), moving through a location, and having a creative idea for each session even if I am at the same location over and over. I also arrive in advance of the session and walk through the location while doing a mindfulness meditation to prepare for the shoot.
