Here are photos from a recent bighorn sheep monitoring effort in the Blue Mountains.

In this rugged landscape, biologists, tribal partners and volunteers work side by side to monitor and test bighorn sheep, working to protect the animals and prevent a dangerous bacterium from spreading through the herd.

Between Feb. 24–26, teams from the Oregon and Washington Departments of Fish and Wildlife, Idaho Fish and Game, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), and the Nez Perce Tribe came together with a shared goal: protecting and sustaining bighorn sheep populations.

The work is about more than wildlife management. It also honors cultural traditions and supports the restoration of ecological balance.

During the bull riding competition, the powerful animal leapt clean into the air, hurled the rider off, dirt flew and the ring collapsed before we even had time to move. The bull charged straight into the mess of cowboys and photographers. We scattered with no order, no grace. Just bodies moving whichever way they could to not get gored. Some of the cowboys were laughing and hooting while they were running. Then the roper rode in, threw the lasso and caught the bull by the horns. The dust settled, the ring was reconstructed and we got back to photographing. What a wild ride.

Native American Beauty Contest was rich in tradition and cultural pride, highlighting the unique artistry, symbolism, and craftsmanship of each participant’s attire representing various tribes and ancestral customs passed down through the generations. Riders showcased not only their regalia but also the deep cultural stories woven into every
detail. The contest is a vibrant celebration of identity, resilience and the spirit of Native American communities throughout the Pacific Northwest.

There’s no easing into photographing the ba****ck competition. The gate flies open and the horse erupts and dust kicks up, the crowd roars and some cowboys go hurling into the heat-hazed air. It’s a moment of pure disorder and I love capturing it. Hope you enjoy these images.
