Back in San Diego this weekend and already feeling inspired.

Sharing a few frames from last year 100% film, mostly 120 on the Mamiya 645. There’s something about slowing down, metering with intention, and trusting the process that just hits different. If you’re into medium format, wedding storytelling, or that timeless film look, this one’s for you.

If you’ve ever trusted your light meter at 0 and still ended up with a blown-out dress… you already know the answer.

The light meter predicts.
The histogram reveals.

Your meter is reading the scene and trying to average everything to middle gray. But weddings aren’t gray. They’re white dresses, black tuxes, backlit vows, candlelit receptions, and chaos moving at full speed.

The histogram shows you what actually happened, where your highlights are clipping and where your shadows are crushed. And when you’re shooting moments you can’t redo, truth beats prediction every time.

Especially photographing the dress!

Most photographers think there’s a “correct” answer here. The truth is, it depends entirely on the feeling you’re trying to create.

On-camera flash feels honest. Direct. Immediate. It captures energy exactly as it was. It puts you in the moment instead of observing it from a distance.

Off-camera flash feels intentional. Sculpted. Controlled. It lets you shape light the same way you shape composition, creating depth and separation that doesn’t exist naturally.

Neither is better. They just tell different stories.

The real skill is knowing when to use each one.
