After what feels like months of cloudy nights an full moons, I finally got to try out a new target. This is my first attempt at the North American Nebula with the star Deneb in the upper left corner. Only a little under 1 hour of exposure time with my unmodified Nikon Z6 and Sigma 70-200mm lens.

Had to wait up till 3am for the clouds to clear out but managed to get my first Milky Way shot of the year. This is very similar to a shot I got almost exactly a year ago at the same spot but I was just happy just to see some stars. I hope to hit some new locations over the next few weeks though and focus more on landscape astro.

Oil and water won’t mix but they do come together to make an awesome photography subject. I had a blast experimenting with the colors and patterns. Best part is that it’s easy enough to do with things from the kitchen.

🤳🌌Cell phone astrophotography?
I have been wondering lately if I could create a passable astro photo only using a cell phone and tracking mount. So, I threw my old Samsung Note 10+ in a cheap phone clamp and bolted it to my tracker. I switched my phone settings to shoot raw images and set a 5 second delay to compensate for the phone shaking every time I touched the screen to take a picture. I took 25 images at 30 seconds each to total 12.5 minutes of exposure time, ISO 1600 f2.8.
Afterwards, I blocked the lens with some cloth and took 10 dark frames to help reduce noise. Stacked everything on my computer and brought out what details I could in lightroom.
I was actually really surprised with the end result. It's not going to win any awards but it shows that astrophotography is accessible even if your only camera is your phone.

🌌Approximately 2,500,000 years ago, photons of light left the Andromeda Galaxy heading towards earth. They traveled through the cosmos until their 2.5 million year journey came to an end when they unceremoniously collided with my camera sensor at 186,000 miles per second.

We found this beautiful Yellow Garden Spider hanging around the other day. She was actually in our garden so 10 points for accurate naming.
Normally I am absolutely terrified of spiders but, I managed to work up the courage to go in for some close ups. Even though she isn't venomous or aggressive, I would have still screamed in an octave typically reserved for bats if it got on me.

We took a stroll through the Fred Hamilton Rhododendron Garden and definitely recommend giving it a visit. The pops of color were really giving us autumn vibes and the kiddos had a blast. 🍂🕸🍁

It's only been 3 months since my last post 😅... I tend to hibernate during the summer and wake up once everything starts smelling like pumpkin spice.
We had a quick shower come through yesterday evening so I took the opportunity to watch the fog roll through the valley and grab a few shots. I love our mountains🌄🍂

Some of you who follow my personal accounts know that my daughter is obsessed with bubbles. So, I am taking pictures of her playing with her bubbles the other day and thought they looked really cool with the way they refract the sunlight. My next thought was "I need to photograph that". Apparently, bubble photography is already a thing and so down another photography rabbit hole I go 🐇.
I have to say this was super fun to do. The colors and patterns you see are mesmerizing to watch. Thought about making a video of it if you all have any interest in that.
