Your headshot is in the room before you are.

Before the handshake. Before the introduction. Before you say a single word. Someone pulls up your profile, your website, your name next to a referral — and in that half-second, they decide something about you.

The trouble is, most accomplished women are letting that decision get made by a photo someone took in ninety seconds, years ago, when they were a different version of themselves. You built the reputation. The photo never caught up.

A real portrait is not vanity. It is the one image doing business on your behalf in every room you are not standing in. It either carries the authority you have earned — or it quietly undersells you to people who will never tell you they moved on.

Some women walk in and you can feel it before they say a word. The years of leading are in how they sit down. Hands folded. Shoulders settled. A gaze that has spent a lifetime holding a room and does not look away from a camera either.

You do not get a face like this without living a great deal. Without building something from nothing and carrying it, and the people in it, for longer than anyone thanked you for. Without coming through things most will never know about, and getting up the next morning anyway.

Here is what I have noticed after doing this for a while. The stronger the woman, the less often anyone stops to really look at her. She is the one everyone leans on, so no one thinks she needs it. She holds still for everyone else and almost never for herself.

That is the whole reason I photograph women in the second half of their lives. Not because they need a picture — they have managed perfectly well without one. Because they have earned the right to be seen the way they have always shown up for everyone else. Fully. On purpose. Without apology.

And when a woman like this finally sits down in front of my camera and lets me do it, it is the greatest privilege of my work.

I know what I am asking of you, because I sat down in it myself.
You come in and you already have a plan. Chin down. Turn to the better side. Arm away from the body. You have been managing this since you were nineteen, and by now it happens without you deciding.
And underneath that, quieter: please don't let it look like what I see in the mirror at seven in the morning.
You are not vain. You are tired. You have been the one holding the camera at every birthday and every graduation for twenty years, which is a very reasonable way to make sure no one ever looks too closely at you.
So we start there. Braced. Both of us know it.
Then somewhere in the first half hour you forget to hold your face. You say something and you mean it. You stop guarding your own eyes.
That is the frame. That is the only one I care about. Not the pretty one, the one where you are finally in the room.
This is mine. Taken on a Tuesday, alone, arm out, after three months of putting it off.

I built my own AI model.

I wanted to see if this thing could really replace what I do.
It couldn't even come close.
The lighting was flat. The expressions were generic. The eyes — the part that makes people trust you — were completely dead. It looked like me, but it didn't feel like me.

And here's the thing — I did it the hard way. I trained a custom model with my best professional photos. Most people don't do that. Most people upload one selfie to a headshot app and hit generate.

The results are even worse.
An AI headshot doesn't capture you. It captures a guess. A prediction based on patterns. There's no real eye contact. No real energy. No moment where you forgot you were being photographed and something genuine came through.

You know who notices? Everyone.
Your clients notice. The woman thinking about hiring you looks at your photo and something feels off. She can't name it. But she scrolls past.

Your colleagues notice. That "new headshot" looks a little too polished. A little too smooth. A little too perfect. And perfect doesn't build trust. Real does.

Here's what AI can't do:
Sit in your living room and go through your closet to find the outfit that actually represents your brand. Coach you to drop the people-pleasing smile and show the version of you that closes deals. Hand you a glass of water between outfit changes and tell you that you look incredible — and mean it.
The experience matters. The connection matters. The fact that another human being looked at you and said "right there, that's the one" — that matters.
I'm not worried about AI replacing photographers.
I'm worried about smart, successful women settling for something that makes them look fake at the exact moment they need to look real.
You've spent decades building credibility. Don't let a $30 app undo it.

That's what an outdated photo does. It tells people you haven't changed. Haven't grown. Haven't done anything worth noticing in four years.
I see it all the time. A woman walks into my studio and she's running a seven-figure business, leading teams, making decisions that move industries. But the photo on her website? Her social media? It's from a different life.
Here's what I've learned after four years of photographing women over 40:
Every single time a client updates her photo after a long silence, her inbox lights up. Messages from people she hasn't heard from in months. New connections. Conversations that lead to real business.
