After exploring how the feet help carry the language of Hula Kahiko, we take a closer look at the strength, grounding, and intention within each step.

Every placement matters. Every shift carries meaning.

Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the quiet ones. They just show up and give you the space to pause, reflect, and simply be present with the ocean, the breeze, and the beauty around you.

In Hula Kāhiko, the eyes do more than look.

They lead.
They listen.
They remember.
They carry the emotion of the mele (chant).

This second video in our movement series focuses on the eyes: the intensity, the focus, and the presence that help bring the story forward.

In Hula Kāhiko, meaning is not held in one gesture alone. It lives in the connection between the chant, the body, the hands, the feet, the expression, and the gaze. The eyes can reveal reverence, strength, longing, warning, devotion, or connection to place and spirit.

They draw us into the story.

Kim Taylor Reece has an extraordinary ability to capture that moment when the dancer’s gaze becomes part of the language of the image. In his work, the eyes are not passive. They are alive with purpose.

This series invites us to pause and look closer at the movements and expressions that make Hula Kāhiko so powerful.

First, we looked at the feet.

Now, we look to the eyes.

A moment of reflection. A moment of connection.

Side by side, the Hula Kahiko dancers stand in quiet harmony, each carrying her own expression while remaining part of something greater. In this stillness, there is appreciation for the land, the culture, and the shared language of hula.

In Hula Kāhiko, every movement carries meaning, and the story begins from the ground up. This first video in our new movement series focuses on the feet: the foundation of the dance, the rhythm, the connection to the ʻāina (land or earth), and the discipline that supports everything the viewer sees above.

The feet keep time.
They hold strength.
They anchor the body.
They carry the dancer through the mele (chant or song).

In Hula Kāhiko, beauty is not only in the hands, the expression, or the sweep of the body. It is also in the grounded precision of each step, the weight shift, the balance, and the quiet power that connects dancer, chant, and place. Kim Taylor Reece knows this. His photography invites us to look closer, to see not only the image, but the cultural knowledge, training, and reverence within the movement.
This series is an invitation to pause, observe, and appreciate the language of Hula Kāhiko one movement at a time.

Behind the scenes with the Kim Taylor Reece team.

Every finished image begins with a shared vision, careful direction, patient photographers, and a dancer bringing the story to life. This is where movement, culture, landscape, and artistry come together, one frame at a time.

In Hula Kāhiko, movement carries story. Every gesture, every line of the body, every shift in expression is part of something deeper than performance. It is a language of memory, place, spirit and lineage.

Kim's images do not simply capture a dancer in motion. They invite us to pause long enough to feel the cultural weight of the moment: the discipline, the beauty, the ancient voice, the sacred connection between movement and meaning.

Hula Kāhiko is not only seen. It is felt.
