The NJMFPA is made up of over 100 members from all aspects of the emergency services fields. We have police officers, firemen, EMS workers, dispatchers, and plenty of firebuffs. We are one of the largest active fire photography associations on the East Coast, and our national associate membership base stretches as far as Chicago, Louisiana, Florida, and overseas to England. We hold monthly meeting

s, usually on the third Sunday of each month, at various firehouse locations in the Bergen, Passaic, and Essex county regions of New Jersey. Guests and visiting buffs are always welcome to attend a meeting. Additionally, we organize several trips to visit brother firemen in other states during the course of the year.

It is with deep regret and profound sadness to inform you that our club's founder, Richard Wolfson, passed away on Friday, November 17th, 2023.

Richie was our club's founder, first president, and life-long member of the New Jersey Metro Fire Photographers Association. He was a mentor to many aspiring photographers, and made a true impact in the field of fire photography. His photography appeared in many magazine and trade publications. He was the producer of the NJMFPA Club Show presented at "photo nights" across the state and beyond. He was also a member of Garfield Fire Department, Engine Co #1. In addition, he worked as a private fire investigator, and a member of many organizations.

When details of arrangements are made, we will post and share them with you. Please keep his wife Sharon, daughter Shannon and the Wolfson family in your thoughts and prayers.

This morning, 05/20/2020 at approximately 0845 hours, Fireman Keith Nicoliello will sign off from Ladder 30. He has spent over 39 years dedicated to the city of New York and leaves with honor as one of the top senior men in the department.

While a formal ceremony cannot be held due to the current events, please tune into to the Manhattan frequency (482.1065, 146.2) or Radio Reference broadcastify for the radio transmissions. It's bound to be an epic event.

Keith has been a member of the NJMFPA from it's early beginnings and has mentored many of our members and friends. He is a true buff and loves the brotherhood of the fire service. Thank you for all you have done, and God bless. Enjoy your retirement.

Sad day in history, 30 years ago.

30 years ago, an intentionally set fire in the illegal Happy Land Social Club in the Bronx claimed the lives of 87 people and led to a new legislation to ensure public safety. The FDNY Bureau of Fire Investigation formed the Social Club Task Force, known as the Multi Agency Response Community Hotspots (MARCH) team to prevent such incidents from happening again. The task force inspects and closes hazardous locations in New York City.

The fire remains the worst case of mass murder by a single individual in New York City history. It is also the single worst loss of life since the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, which occurred on the same day 79 years earlier.

At the time of the Happy Land fire, the FDNY had a small counseling unit, in which FDNY members with training provided peer counseling to members in need. This incident was one of the first tragedies that utilized the FDNY Counseling Services Unit. Since then, the unit has evolved and grown within the Department. Today, the Counseling Services Unit operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with the mission to help FDNY members and their families reach their optimal level of mental health by offering assessment, treatment planning, direct treatment, referrals and follow-up. The staff of the Counseling Service Unit works in concert with the FDNY administration, chief officers, line officers, union officials, and the Bureau of Health Services.

Sad news, Rest In Peace Jack.

Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro today announced the death of FDNY’s chief historian and U.S. Army Veteran, Jack Lerch, age 88. Jack was a supporter of the FDNY his entire life. For many years, he worked at the Mand Library at the Fire Academy, which houses historical documents, books, and publications about the FDNY. He has been collecting data and photographs of New York City fire apparatus since 1945. Jack is an FDNY Honorary Chief of Department and often took part in fundraising to support the Department and the NYC Fire Museum. He was a constant presence at FDNY memorial services and the Department’s annual Medal Day celebration, including taking part in funding the Thomas A. Kenny Memorial Medal through his role as President of the Honorary Fire Officers Association. The Department also presents the Honorary Chief of Department Jack Lerch Medal each year to a uniformed or civilian member of the Bureau of Fleet Services for outstanding service. He was the founder and editor of the Bell Club News Notes, which contributes a vast amount of time and effort to the Fire Museum. Commissioner Nigro says, “If you had a question about the history of the FDNY, you didn’t need to google it or go to an encyclopedia, you just had to ask Jack Lerch. He was our Department’s chief historian, he proudly served his country, and he was a great friend to everyone who ever wore the uniform of the FDNY. He will be sorely missed by all of us.”

Sad to announce we lost a friend and good firebuff today. Rest In Peace, Hook.
