How it all started…. Joshua Acosta’s story begins in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where a curious kid found himself constantly looking upward. The night sky wasn’t just a backdrop—it was a place of wonder, comfort, and endless possibility. When his mother placed his first telescope into his hands when he was 10, it
wasn’t merely a gift. It was an invitation. An opening to a universe he never stopped exploring. For years, Joshua lived his passion through the eyepiece, spending quiet nights as a visual observer, learning patience, awe, and humility in the glow of distant stars. But it wasn’t until his early forties—when astrophotography equipment became more accessible—that something inside him reignited. The camera became a new kind of telescope, one that could capture what his heart had always felt but his eyes could never fully hold. With it, astronomy transformed from a hobby into a calling. That calling grew even deeper after he experienced one of the hardest losses of his life. Joshua’s mother—a nurse who devoted over forty years to caring for others, and whose love for animals was as boundless as her compassion—passed away from complications after a stem cell transplant. Her absence left a void, but also a promise. In her memory, Joshua committed himself to something meaningful: that part of his astrophotography proceeds would go to no-kill animal shelters, honoring her lifelong dedication to kindness and care. Every image he creates becomes, in some way, a continuation of her spirit—an echo of the generosity and love she lived by every day. Today, when Joshua photographs the cosmos, he doesn’t just capture nebulae, galaxies, or starfields. He captures a connection. He captures legacy. He captures the feeling of that first telescope in his hands—the feeling his mother gave him, of love, of wonder, of hope, and always having a piece of someone who is no longer is with us....
