'The Vortex'

A sandstone bowl known as 'The Vortex' under a beautiful monsoon sky! I waited out the rain and thunder in a tiny rock overhang to the right of this scene, and as the storms moved on I came out and captured this 9-image panorama.

The storm intensified again producing a lot of cloud to ground lightning and downdrafts so intense they were obscuring the Pine Valley Mountains.

It’s going to be a long summer… I’ve always wanted to be present for a large wildfire incident to document it, and I’ve always been conflicted due to not wanting to be in the way of firefighters, etc.

Enter the Grapevine Fire in Nevada which has burned just over 23,000 acres over the past week and has largely been in the Clover Mountains Wilderness and BLM land in a sparsely populated area just across the border from Utah. Some rugged roads and trails provide about the only access to the nearby area on the ground. While I was still several miles away it was fascinating to watch for a bit just how volatile these fires can be as they move and change the landscape in minutes.

It is now prompting a ‘Ready’ status for some evacuations in Northwestern Washington County as it moves closer to the border. Hoping rain today can make a difference before some critical fire weather conditions going into the weekend.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Prominent sandstone peaks known as The North and South Guardian Angel stand guard several hundred feet above the Left Fork of North Creek and the infamous ‘Subway’ in Zion National Park.

I chose a precarious vantage point on a ledge looking south and east from near the Northgate Peaks and took the foreground image at blue hour, then waited a few hours for the Milky Way to rise close to midnight and blended the images to produce this shot.

Last night turned out to be pretty cool… some new work from Zion coming soon!

Tonight was pretty close to being so special… but the sun only managed to break the clouds for a brief moment right before it set. I captured this image of a hoodoo tucked on an obscure sandstone shelf above Zion’s ‘Hop Valley’ with Red Butte looming in the distance. The Pine Valley Mountains also make an appearance dressed in some fresh snow. I wish this light had lasted longer, definitely plan to visit this spot again in the future!

White Pocket in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument has been on my bucket list for a long time. During this visit I only was able to stay for a single day but I plan on some longer trips with camping out there in the future… I lucked out with several periods of interesting clouds through the day as a storm system rolled in over this surreal slick rock playground!
