Missouri Monsters: Testing on the GE test track in September of 1985 is Missouri Pacific C36-7s 9000 and 9001. They were the first of 60 large GEs purchased by the MP as a subsidiary of Union Pacific. The 3750 Horsepower units were the largest purchased by the MP and they had the largest order for these units. The units had a big dynamic brake assemblies on the long hood and the air tanks were also mounted there instead of next to the fuel tank. This was to allow for the maximum size fuel tank of 4, 500 gallons. #9000 kept its MP lettering until 1988. UP retired it as #7942 in 2001. (Sid Lewis)

Taking it slow: A Norfolk Southern Intermodal train led by NS (N&W) SD40 #1620 rolls down 19th Street in Erie, Pa in November 1997. It was rather unusual to see a single older locomotive in charge of priority trains at this point. The train is crossing Cherry Street and is only about half way up the length of street running here. It was common to see long drags of freight plug up the street for long periods of time. It is all just a memory now. As for #1620 it still is active on NS, albeit as Research Geometry car #38! 19th Street train: June 10, 1997 we see a Norfolk Southern SD60 #6616 pulling train 268 up 19th Street in Erie, Pa. One of the many unique features of Erie railroading , it was also an issue for the City for many years. After the Conrail Split between Norfolk Southern and CSX concerns over increased traffic forced NS to build a bypass along the old New York Central route through town. It was abandoned in 2001. As for NS SD60 #6616, it is now SD60E #6999 as of 2015. (Sid Lewis)
