I’m honored and humbled to have one of my Northern Saw Whet Owl photographs recognized as DownEast Magazine’s November Maine Moment of 2026!
I had hoped this photograph from last year would receive some recognition, given how elusive and challenging Northern Saw Whet Owls can be to find and photograph.
There was a point when I showed up every day for two weeks without seeing the owls. I came close to giving up, but I kept going. Seeing the owls remain in the area and watching their nest successfully progress made the patience and persistence worthwhile.
After countless hours of waiting and days of returning with the hope of another glimpse, I was rewarded with this photograph of one of the owlets.
Sometimes, the most rewarding moments come when you least expect them.
I’m incredibly grateful to have this special encounter recognized by DownEast Magazine. It’s a moment I’ll always appreciate.
It is one of my favorite photos I’ve taken so far in my photography journey.
