Local Agencies Work Together to Combat He**in Epidemic
Hospice of Washington County is proud to host a second meeting on March 22 at 7 p.m. to continue the momentum that was established as a result of the Save Our Children presentation held on March 8, 2016. The meeting will be held at the Hancock Community Life Center, located at 126 W. High Street. Hancock Chief of Police, T.J. Buskirk, a representative of the Narcotics Task Force and Tammy Keener from the Washington County Health Department will discuss the he**in epidemic in Washington County and the supports and strategies employed by local agencies to address this issue.
In addition, community resident, Jodi Finney will share recent efforts to establish a Hancock Chapter of Save Our Children. According to Ms. Finney, the Hancock Save Our Children group will offer support to families living with addiction. “Nobody should have to travel down the road to find understanding and support. We can give that to each other right here in Hancock”, she said. Hancock Save Our Children’s first meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. in the Hancock Community Life Center, located in Town Hall, 2nd floor.
Tammy Keener, Program Coordinator for Prevention Services at the Washington County Health Department, will lead a Narcan Training session for interested community members. Narcan, which can be administered by properly trained individuals, is a prescription medicine that blocks the effects of opioids. According to experts, “Narcan™ (naloxone) gives concerned helpers a window of opportunity to save a life by providing extra time to call 911 and carry out rescue breathing and first aid until emergency medical help arrives.”
The event is open to the public. For more information, call Hospice of Washington County at 301-791-6360. Ask for Bernadette Wagner.
