If you have wiggly, messy, sensory-loving, creative kids and want to actually get in the photos with them, these paint minis are for you.

True story: a couple of years ago I canceled the ‘traditional’ family photos we had booked because I knew my daughter was not going to sit and smile…and was more likely to roll around in the dirt and mess up her dress and her hair and that the whole thing was going to derail entirely…and then I found someone offering paint minis.

And my feral, ferocious Tiger Lily sat still, concentrated on what she was doing, and went absolutely nuts with excitement when we got to “go wild” and paint each other. Two years later, she still talks about the time we went painting with Ms. Aryn (shout out !!).

Ever since, I have wanted to offer this type of session to my own clients, and this is the year!

At one point yesterday, I had to say “hey guys, this light really isn’t working. Would you be willing to adjust the game plan so I can give you the quality of product you’re expecting?”

A couple of years ago, I would have been too embarrassed to say I couldn’t make the light work. I would have been too afraid of getting behind on the timeline. I would have worried that admitting a mistake midday would cause the couple to lose trust in me. Then, later, I’d be banging my head against the wall trying to fix my mistakes in Lightroom, editing and re-editing, and ultimately delivering photos I wasn’t super proud of.

Katrina and Colby agreed without hesitation- and we ended up getting photos that we ALL loved.

In yesterday’s case, I let experience override the timeline (sorry 😅), had a couple who trusted me completely, and went home knowing I gave it my all. While I’m normally a timeline stickler, I’m learning that sometimes, the best *overall* experience means being able to adapt and adjust in real time.

Normally I just say things like “Look! They got married and it was pretty!” - which is true - but I thought it would be fun to share some of the real “behind the scenes” action that makes the golden hour magic happen.

Katrina & Colby, it was a joy to be your photographer, and an honor to witness your love. Hope to see you two again in the near future. 🥰
