New research is revealing the hidden environmental cost of AI.

A peer-reviewed study found that in 2025, AI systems used hundreds of billions of liters of water, mainly to cool the massive data centers running models like ChatGPT. That’s on par with the entire global bottled water industry for a year.

The same research estimates AI’s carbon emissions at 32 to nearly 80 million tonnes of CO₂, roughly equal to New York City’s annual emissions from energy and transport.

Experts warn that as AI use explodes, this impact will only grow unless companies invest in renewable energy, greener data centers, and smarter cooling technology.

It’s a real paradox. AI could help fight climate change, but without changes, it risks becoming a major part of the problem.

While accepting an Innovator Award from the Wall Street Journal—a room literally filled with the world's richest people—Billie Eilish decided to put the billionaires on notice. She called them out, saying, “If you have money, it would be great to use it for good things and maybe give it to some people that need it. Love you all, but there’s a few people in here that have a lot more money than me. If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but give your money away, shorties.” And she's backing it up by donating a massive $11.5 million from her own tour proceeds to support food equity, climate justice, reducing carbon pollution and combatting the climate crisis.
