Even though they keep trying to roll it back, this day matters!
On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, banning discriminatory voting practices that had been used to keep Black Americans from the ballot box.
The law came after generations of organizing, protest, and sacrifice, including the work of civil rights leaders, grassroots organizers, and everyday people who risked their lives for the right to vote.
Today, we remember the people who fought to make the ballot more accessible and the ongoing work to protect the right they fought for.
