Today I went to the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park to see the Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies. There were so many flying around! I had a giant blue common morpho sitting on my hand for about 5 minutes.

There were also beautiful orchids all over, along with a multitude of tropical plants. I'll definitely be going back.

Who would've thought that Lady Aurora would put on such a show as she did last night?!?! The lights were seen as far south as Southern Louisiana and 1/2 hour from the Mexican border!

Here in Michigan, they surely didn't disappoint! When the data started coming in earlier in the day, which happened to be my birthday, we were on our way 2 hours away to hike our favorite trails. We didn't bring much with us, certainly not anything to be able to stay anywhere overnight. After hiking, I started seeing reports of incredible numbers and was kind of bummed as we made our way back home to Hamilton, a tiny town about 20 minutes from Holland.

As it got dark, some clouds started coming in from the storms over the lake. Again, feeling bummed, I went and took a shower. Now, for some reason, ever since living in Alaska for so many years, I "feel" the aurora. In the middle of my shower, I felt this pop of energy, like I could run a marathon, even after hiking almost six miles.

I jumped out of the shower and, in my pajamas, went out on the deck and saw whispy, undulating color! I grabbed my camera, set up, and shot for over 2 hours before the clouds finally covered the sky.

Here are just some of my favorites. I have so many!

This made my day! It is so rainy and cloudy here in Michigan that I did not think I could see the partial eclipse today, but low and behold the clouds parted for about a half hour! I went running like a crazy woman through the house because I knew RIGHT where my protective eclipse glasses and lens covers were!!!

I feel so lucky to have personally witnessed this amazing phenomenon!

Full Thunder Blood Moon
July 3, 2023
Hamilton, MI

The first is right off the horizon, going through forest fire haze, which is why it's red. The second is about 10 minutes later after rising above the haze. More normal color.

The July Full Moon name is known as the Full Buck Moon. Native Americans (particularity the Algonquin tribe) named it so because of the appearance of antlers on the young bucks at this time of the year.

Other tribes and even early settlers have additional names for the July full moon. Others include:
Berry Moon
Raspberry Moon
Thunder Moon
Salmon Moon

The full moon tonight will rise at 10:08PM and the moons proximity to the earth will be close enough to be deemed a supermoon. Its appearance will be 14% larger than normal and 30% brighter.

Full Strawberry Moon

June 4, 2023

Taken in Hamilton, Michigan at 12:42 a.m.

It looks pink/red due to smoke haze in the air. The name has nothing to do with what color the moon is. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, which first began publishing names for full moons in the 1930s, the full moon in June was dubbed the Strawberry Moon by several Native American tribes to match the short harvest season for strawberries.

It's been a minute since I posted here. I won't go into detail but it's been a pretty hellacious two years.

I moved to Michigan in October of last year and had not touched my camera since then. Depression took over and I just didn't care to find joy in anything.

That has since changed. We had aurora here, and I have never seen so many swans as I've seen here. Hundreds of them! There are also tons of eagles and other song birds that were not on the West coast.

Here is Fred posing in the quintessential male swan pose, flirting with his mate and also posturing to keep rival males away. He was right below me on a boardwalk and stayed near me for nearly a half hour.

I have tons more photos from this week. I promise to not be a stranger anymore. Spring is getting closer, which means more birds, cygnets, wildflowers, and beach pictures.
