I've temporarily moved to Western Colorado to work in the wildland fire field. I'll be back in WNY in the Fall, but you can expect wildland fire related images over the next few months. Here is a helitack crew arriving at our base on Friday afternoon to return four smokejumpers from a nearby fire.

It feels strange to not have Mercy Flight overhead. Living here in Hamburg, our home sits just below the flight path they use to fly to the Southtowns and beyond, and we can normally hear their birds fly over at least twice a day, and sometimes many more than that.

The loss of Mercy Flight 7 has affected just about every first responder in Western New York in some way or another. If you didn't know Jim, you probably knew someone who did. Though I didn't have the chance to personally meet him, I've heard what a great person he was through several others who did. He was a 40-year Army combat veteran, and a pilot with the New York State Police and The New York Army National Guard, a volunteer firefighter, and a police officer for both Rochester and Holley police departments. After that impressive career, he came to work with Mercy Flight, where he was a loved and valued member of the team.

'Seven' was used to fly patients at incidents throughout the region, flying to wrecks in Machias, Fredonia, Angola, and just about everywhere else. The bird was used to fly out a patient that had a tree fall on him a couple years ago in Evans. It flew a lineman that fell off of telephone pole in Wales Center last year. It flew countless patients of major wrecks all along Route 5 from Hamburg to Chautauqua County. We'll never know how many lives it saved, but it was a ton.

February 23, 2022 - Structure Fire with Entrapment

Three and a half hours, a dead camera battery, hundreds of photos, and no time to go through them all. This is my favorite image (so far) of the working commercial structure fire at 1436 Ridge. More to come soon.

November 20, 2021 - Structure Fire

Around 10am, Buffalo firefighters responded to a report of a possible structure fire at 1038 Clinton Street. The caller reported that a woman had set fire to a door during a domestic incident. Crews arrived and reported fire in the second floor of the home. All occupants escaped, and the house was saved before flames could spread to other floors.

November 1, 2021 - Rescue with Double Medevac

On the evening of November 1st, at around 4:30pm, emergency crews were notified of an incident on Merlau Road, in Wales Center, regarding two NYSEG linemen that had fallen about 40 feet from the top of a telephone pole and landed in a ditch. Crews responded and pinpointed the site as being at least a half mile from the nearest road, utilizing ATV rescue teams to assist in extracting both patients from the wooded area.

While the rescue operation was underway, a landing zone was set up at Thorpe's Farm. Ultimately, two helicopters, Mercy Flight 7 and Mercy Flight 8, transported one patient each to ECMC.

On Thursday evening, the Erie County Department of Homeland Security hosted a robotic firefighting demonstration, in conjunction with MES Fire, of the new MES Thermite RS3. The RS3 is a diesel powered, caterpillar tracked robot designed to fight fires when firefighters aren't safely able to.

"This vehicle isn't designed to replace firefighters," the salesman stated. "It's designed to keep them in the fight when they'd otherwise not be able to stay in the fight."

During the exercise, the RS3 was fed water through an attack line stretched off of Buffalo Fire Engine 38. The unmanned vehicle was able to extinguish two burning cars, knocking down the bulk of the fire in mere seconds, with firefighters standing about 50 feet away. The unit has a radio range of about one mile from the operator, and can perform for up to 24 hours before needing to be refueled. Sensors on the sides of the unit detect how high temperatures are on the vehicle's exterior, and small water nozzles positioned on the outside of the unit will automatically spray water around the vehicle if temperatures exceed 180°F to protect it.

7/20/21 - Bedford Avenue House Explosion
Lackawanna, NY

I had just arrived at our office around 7:45am on Tuesday when a friend texted me and advised that a house had just exploded in the City of Lackawanna. Additional tips and alerts started to trickle in, and soon photos of the blast site started appearing on social media.

After work, I arrived on scene at approximately 4pm to catch workers mitigating additional hazards and scoping out the extent of the damages. By this time, Fire and Police had mostly cleared the scene and the American Red Cross was assisting the nearby homeowners who had been affected.

A 92 year old woman died in the explosion. There were no other injuries reported. An intensive, multi-agency investigation is underway to find the cause of the explosion.
