New neighbors Day 7...

This morning it was cool and rainy. I looked out and the nest, dangling from its wire, was tilted precariously. Then I looked below and saw a tiny, maybe 1cm long baby, on the porch, about 8 feet below the nest.

I thought it was dead and with a heavy heart went and grabbed an envelope out of recycling, and went to scoop it up. There were some leaves nearby and as I used them to nudge it onto the paper, it started squirming vigorously. I took the envelope and folded it up on either side, climbed the ladder, and then poured it back into the nest. It popped in, right on top of its sibling.

As I did this, Big Mean Mamma was hovering nearby but as soon as I went back inside, Cool Loving Momma perched on the edge of the nest and poked around with her beak, and then put her feet inside and did a bit of a dance. A bit later I looked back in the nest and they were nestled together as if nothing had happened.

New Neighbors, Day 6

In earlier days there was still space in the nest but now they are beginning to fill it. They still don't look very birdlike but they're getting there!!

Facebook only post.... So the hummingbird-Momma built her nest right in front of the front door. This complicated things for everyone, but I realized what it was and shifted it a foot or so, and when she kept building I did that again until it at least wasn't in the direct line of traffic.

It is low enough to be accessible but high enough to be awkward and my tripods aren't THAT tall, so I have improvised.

She seems okay feeding and sitting with her babies while the camera shutters are clicking but she doesn't tolerate human presence very well. In this photo from my phone she was hovering nearby (marked with a red arrow for those with great eyesight.

This morning her nest was tipped a little. I pulled the light string a little tighter on the hook so less chance of babies getting dumped, but it is a precarious place to perch anyway.

New Neighbors, Day 4.

Instead of babies, today I am showcasing their amazing Mom. In a couple shots you can see the small ones reaching up for some nibbles when Door Dash Momma shows up.

New neighbors, day 2....

In the morning when I had tried to get this photo I was being dive-bombed by an angry Madre. By the heat of the afternoon she had gone elsewhere for a while so I managed to snap this quick pick.

These little ones were fairly like blobs yesterday after their eggs hatched. Now they are looking more like birds even if not hummingbirds.

Our newest neighbors.

The first photo was taken at about 11am this morning. When I checked again about 3:20 there was still 1 egg and 1 baby. By 5:30 there are now two babies.

And a fiercely protective mother that does not appreciate my nosiness.

Last summer I was excited to find that a hummingbird had made her nest in the tree right in front of the house. Only a little out of reach. And I got a blurry shot of some eggs in the nest while precariously standing on a short stepladder.

A couple weeks ago I found myself buzzed several times when I'd step outside and thought maybe she was greeting me, then I looked up and saw some fluff on the Christmas lights still hanging there and the light bulb went off.

The funny thing is the nest was maybe 3 or 4 inches from the storm door when it was wide open. I figured this would never do, so I restrung the lights carefully moving them down a foot or so.

The next day, after watching her continuing to build, I did it again, putting it a little more distant from our daily path.

Yesterday I captured a video of her bringing fluff and packing it in. I thought I'd do more of that but this morning she was staying put. She even let the family walk through the door and past her without flying away.

When I got back this afternoon, I looked and found this. As I type she is sitting on it again and I am again capturing some video.

I guess getting more photos of the nest building is past, but now we watch and wait.....
