East Texas morning for little more dove hunting

He started out riding ba****ck horses and bulls at fifteen. When a friend got hurt, he filled in as the clown and bullfighter almost by accident. He never went back — and decades later, a Capuchin monkey dressed as a cowboy made him one of the most beloved names in rodeo entertainment history.
Tommy Lucia's rodeo career began at fifteen, competing in ba****ck and bull riding. Then a friend's injury forced him into the arena as a fill-in clown and bullfighter. By twenty, he'd made the full switch to bullfighting as his career. Then, at the urging of fellow legend George Doak, he applied to be the barrelman for the Fort Worth Stock Show — and found his true calling right there in the barrel.
Then he became one of the most creative entertainers the sport had ever seen. He built pantomime acts, a matador routine performed alongside trained "bull dogs," and countless other bits designed to fill the gaps between events and keep a crowd on its feet. His act In His Glory, featuring a jet-black swayback dancing horse, brought audiences to tears across the country. Then came his signature act — Whiplash, the Cowboy Monkey, a Capuchin dressed head to toe in cowboy gear, riding a border collie into the arena to herd sheep. Whiplash became so popular he was booked for Taco John's and Dairy Queen commercials, appeared on Good Morning America, ESPN, and The Today Show, and became a genuine viral sensation on YouTube decades into Lucia's career.
Then he even made it onto the big screen, working as an extra and bullfighter in Junior Bonner in 1972 and The Great American Cowboy in 1973. He won three consecutive PRCA Entertainer of the Year awards, from 2003 through 2005. He worked the Texas Circuit Finals four times, served as barrelman at the National Finals Rodeo in 1973, and opened the National Finals with his own acts five separate times across his career. He retired in 2014.
Inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2019. His son, Anthony Lucia, grew up right alongside him in the arena — trick roping at the NFR from 2010 through 2013 before becoming the reigning three-time PRCA Announcer of the Year himself, carrying the family's rodeo entertainment legacy into a new generation entirely.
A bullfighter who found his calling by accident. A monkey named Whiplash who became a household name far beyond rodeo. A legacy now carried forward by his own son behind the microphone.
That is Tommy Lucia. 🤠🐴🏆

Fifty days. One shot.

The countdown is officially on to the Boot Barn Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo! In just 50 days, the arena lights come on, the chutes swing open, and the best cowboys and cowgirls in the Texas Circuit battle for a championship.

Like every great saddle bronc ride, it's all about grit, timing, and hanging on for eight unforgettable seconds. Who's ready to ride into the Finals?

Little storm blew in while waiting on the draw bridge over the James river. Wind gusts, lightning everywhere and what seemed like a 100 ft in the air next to a tall chunk of metal. Very questionable
