BANKHEAD TUNNEL AND MOBILE BAY IN MOBILE

HISTORY OF BANKHEAD TUNNEL

The Bankhead Tunnel, formally the John H. Bankhead Tunnel, is a road tunnel in Mobile, Alabama that carries Government Street under the Mobile River from Blakeley Island to the downtown Mobile business district. It is named for John Hollis Bankhead, an Alabama politician and U.S. Senator (served 1907-1920) who was also the grandfather of actress Tallulah Bankhead. It, like the larger George Wallace Tunnel (built 1969-1973) a few blocks downriver from it, was constructed in Mobile at the shipyards of the Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company (ADDSCO), from 1938-1940.The eastern end of the Bankhead Tunnel features a large "flood door" that can be closed to prevent water from Mobile Bay flooding the tunnel during surges from hurricanes or tropical storms. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on January 25, 1977.

Map of eastern Mobile, showing the Bankhead Tunnel's path under the Mobile River, connecting downtown Mobile to Battleship Parkway on Blakeley Island.

Opened. February 20,1941
(built 1938-1942)

Toll 1941 to mid-1970s

Length 3,389 feet (1,033 m)

No. of lanes 2

Tunnel clearance 12 feet (4 m)
Width 21 feet (6 m)

The tunnel was built in sections and floated to the proper positions, then sunk. Each section was sunk next to the previous section and joined underwater.

When all sections were connected, and concrete set into place, they were pumped dry and finished out. The depth of clearance is 40 ft (12.2 m) for the ship channel over the tunnel.

The entrances were designed in the Art Deco style that was popular during the time of construction. It was completed in 1940 at a cost of $4 million and opened to the public on February 20, 1941. A toll fee was charged at the east side, from 1941 to the mid-1970s, when the toll plaza was dismantled. The tube carries two lanes of travel, and no pedestrian or non-motorized vehicular traffic is permitted.

The tunnel was designed by Oliver Fowlkes and construction directed by Wayne Palmer of Mobile. Only passenger cars and pickup trucks are still allowed to travel through the tunnel, as it is very narrow.

Large trucks and hazardous cargo are routed (on U.S. 90/Truck U.S. 98) over the Cochrane–Africatown USA Bridge miles to the north or the George Wallace Tunnel on Interstate 10 a few blocks to the south.

The tunnel was the location of a scene in the 1977 blockbuster Close Encounters of the Third Kind by director Steven Spielberg, a film which was primarily filmed in the Mobile area. In this particular scene Roy Neary, played by Richard Dreyfuss, drives through the tunnel as he chases UFOs.

The tunnel was later featured during a motorcycle chase scene in the 1991 film Stone Cold, starring Brian Bosworth.

The larger George Wallace Tunnel (built 1969-1973) a few blocks downriver from it, was constructed in Mobile at the shipyards of the Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company (ADDSCO),

MOBILE BAY

Mobile Bay is 413 square miles (1,070 km2) in area. It is 31 miles (50 km) long by a maximum width of 24 miles (39 km). The deepest areas of the bay are located within the shipping channel, sometimes in excess of 75 feet (23 m) deep, but the average depth of the bay is 10 feet (3 m).

The Alabama river flows west to Selma, then southwest until, about 45 miles (72 km) from Mobile, it unites with the Tombigbee, forming the Mobile and Tensaw rivers, which discharge into Mobile Bay.

Mobile, Alabama features prominently in baseball lore, with more players in Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame than any city except New York and Los Angeles. The list includes Hank Aaron, Ozzie Smith, and Satchel Paige. ... Mobile is also the setting for one of the most famouslines of the American Civil War.

Mobile Founded by the French in 1702, Mobile is Alabama's oldest city and a major port facility for the region.

GULF STATE PARK

We welcome all to our paradise🌴Just remember to drive like you live here and be kind to everybody… You’re on Beach time,No hurries, no worries😎

New speed limit in Gulf State Park Hwy 135 from at Walmart Hwy 180 (at Canal) to Beach Blvd at the Pier.

Gulf State Park announces 26 MPH Speed Limit.

Gulf State Park and the City of Gulf Shores has implemented a speed limit on Alabama Highway 135, one of the gateways to the park.

Public safety is the goal for the reduction in the limit from 35 mph, particularly in light of the increased use along the route for hikers, bikers, walkers and other park guests.

Signage and radar reminders are activated along Alabama 135 and an increased presence of the Gulf Shores Police and Alabama State Parks rangers to enforce the speed limit.

“This route is an entrance to our beautiful Gulf State Park, not just another state road,” said Chris Blankenship, Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

“Highway 135 brings people to the park’s campground, to the Nature Center, cottages and cabins and the golf course.

Park guests bike, walk and hike along Highway 135. It’s important that traffic is managed at a reasonable and safe speed in this area.”

More traffic is expected to use the 2.138-mile Alabama 135 to get to the park and its conference center. Gulf Shores and parks officials agreed lowering the speed limit in advance of the opening would be beneficial to park guests.

“We are proud of all the enhancements recently made at the park,” said Gary Ellis, Gulf State Park Director of Community Relations and Administration. “Alabama 135 is a route into a special neighborhood, one that all kinds of travelers use, not just vehicles. We believe the road sets the tone for our guests, who come from all over the country to relax and enjoy the joys of the outdoors that we have to offer. This speed limit change is for the safety of our guests and we appreciate the support of the Gulf Shores Police Department in this effort.”

The approximately 6,500-acre Gulf State Park includes three miles of white sand beaches, with restored sand dunes, the Gulf of Mexico’s longest fishing pier and 28 miles of walking and biking trails. The park is made up of nine ecosystems.

Gulf State Park has two miles of beaches, a spacious campground and a brand new Lodge to greet you. Yes, we have gorgeous white sand, surging surf, seagulls and a variety of activities, but there is more than sand and surf to sink your toes into.

Gulf State Park is a destination you’re destined to visit over and over again. It’s the only way to enjoy all we have to offer. Just when you’re done hiking, it’s time to go biking. Tired of swimming and paddling in the Gulf? Swim and paddle in Lake Shelby. And if camping under the stars isn’t your thing, take advantage of our indoor lodging amenities. Discover the Park's incredible biodiversity at our Nature Center and take part in one of the educational programs offered daily by our Naturalists. Boredom is about the only thing you won’t find here.

RECREATION
There is something for everyone inside Gulf State Park. The beach pavilion provides picnic tables as an escape from the beach, the nature center is a great place for the kids to learn, the swimming pool provides refreshment for our guests and the Lake Shelby day use area offers kayaking and canoeing. For a change of pace while visiting check out the fishing and education pier, miles of biking on the Backcountry trail, beautiful flowers in the butterfly garden, and additional education at the learning campus, interpretive center in the near future.

Gulf State Park has a multitude of activities to participate in that includes: Hiking. biking, fishing, exploring, geocaching, paddling just to name of few. We even provide beach vendors for things like parasailing and kayaking.
