It gets tiring when many of my photo adventures end up being a bust. I think it’s more frustrating when you find a fantastic view but everything’s wrong. Like this spot. Great place. But the sun set in the wrong place, and the Milky Way was the wrong direction to include something nice in the foreground. The other mountain that could be seen from this view also got cloudy by the time it looked good to shoot. Sometimes it’s nice to have a viewpoint that has been “vetted”, but what so often happens now is it’s “vetted” then campsite and day area put on it with a waiting list longer than 3 months. Then these natural places of beauty turn into a glamping spot you have to wait to see. I’m not against making it easier to get to beautiful spots, but sometimes it’s nice not to be kicked out as a photographer because you haven’t reserved a camping site or can’t be in a place of beauty after a certain hour because it’s been deemed as a “day use only.” On the other hand, the excitement of the night was getting lost with 80 miles till empty and having to turn around and drive another 40 minutes to find the main road and another 30 to get to a gas station and phone service 😂😂

It was cold. Freezing. We were the first ones there and the last ones gone but it was worth the 3am drive up to Larch Mountain even if it is an over photographed place.

Always at the top.

There are benefits to having bad things happen... It really depends on how you look at it.

STORY: The one thing about Milky Way shots is you have to find creative ways to light the foreground. Some stack, some use flashes, some heavily edit in post. This time I wanted to find a simplistic method to light the northwest version of Stonehenge: a phone. I used an app that allowed me to light the Stonehenge and just walked in front of it with my phone brightness to 100%. Apart from the fact that it took me several tries to make sure I lit up the entire Stonehenge in the time the shutter was open, everything else was pretty self explanatory.

Sunset. There's always a good place to see a sunset but nothing can beat a train, cars, a plane and a sunset in one. Just missing a boat. Maybe next time.

Well Larch Mountain was a bust as it's closed because of the fires last year. We went on the old Columbia highway to see if we could find some nice places to look around.

This was the timelapse I took of the sunset on the beach. Talk about the rush up the mountain, set up & shoot in the cold for over an hour for a 9 second timelapse.... But it was worth it. Next time I want to do an all night timelapse of this amazing place.

And this is the problem you have when the world is on fire... Smoke. Beautiful place, trip planned weeks in advanced but smoke was there practically the whole time when we went there this last fall. We had some clear days but generally speaking it was pretty smoky... fantastic view nonetheless.
