Perfect food for this weather - Soup of the Devil 😈
It is always assumed that chili con carne was a traditional Mexican dish, carried north across the border to the United States of America where it was adopted, adapted, and became a part of our blended cultures.
However, chili, as we know it in the U.S., cannot be found in Mexico today, except in a few spots which cater to tourists. If chili had come from Mexico, it would still be there. Mexicans do not change their culinary customs from one generation, or even from one century to another.
There’s a historical record from 17th century of native people from what is now the southwest corner of the United States offering a spicy stew composed of venison or antelope meat, onions, tomatoes, and chili peppers to the Spanish. They wrote down the recipe and called it “Soup of the Devil”.
Chili (turned out delish!) and photos - both made from scratch by me 😋
