Kyra Gleckler knows what it’s like to need assistance. That’s why she started the nonprofit Bloomhub LLC.
Bloomhub provides emergency food support and community resources to individuals and families facing sudden gaps in assistance, particularly those affected by disruptions to government aid programs. Gleckler’s work reflects a growing grassroots response to food insecurity in rural Ohio, where social service providers often step in when public systems fall short.
As a chemical dependency counselor Gleckler saw firsthand what her clients faced when SNAP benefits were suddenly halted because of a government shutdown. Within days, she assembled a crew of volunteers to shop for, organize and deliver food to those in need.
But the urgency brought on by the shutdown is not what drives Gleckler to serve her community. Her journey began years earlier, when she was booked into the Ohio Reformatory for Women after being sentenced on drug-related felony charges.
“Everything I did was a choice, and that stings to think about seven years later,” Gleckler said.
Gleckler identifies two factors that led her down a path that ended in incarceration: the people she was around and emotions she did not know how to manage. In 2019, her drug use — and the crimes that followed — caught up with her. She found herself surrounded by officers with guns drawn.
After spending nearly a year in prison, Gleckler was granted judicial release and entered the Drug Court program through Licking County Common Pleas Court. She spent approximately two years on intensive probation, which required her to attend drug and alcohol treatment, appear at regular court hearings, check in with an officer regularly and submit to random drug testing. It was during this transition that Gleckler had to rely on government assistance for her and her young daughter.
Today, she relishes life as a mother of three, a fiancé and a community coordinator and activist.
“I’m always on the go,” Gleckler said. “I’m working. I’m a full-time mom. I’m taking on this project. I’m always doing something. I have to be careful and mindful that I’m not overdoing it.”
Since November, Bloomhub has served more than 100 families in Guernsey County. Currently, the non-profit is focused on providing Christmas for families in need.
