The 5 Best Outdoor Locations for Family & Portrait Photography in Augusta, GA.
When it comes to planning the perfect family portrait, maternity shoot, or senior session, choosing the right location is just as important as picking the right outfits. Luckily, here in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), we are surrounded by incredible natural beauty, historic architecture, and stunning waterfronts.
As a local Augusta portrait and family photographer, I spend a lot of time scouting the best light and backdrops. If you are struggling to decide where to take your next photos, here are my top five favorite outdoor locations in and around Augusta, Georgia!
1. Savannah Rapids Pavilion (Martinez, GA)
Best for: Family Portraits, Maternity Sessions, and Couples
Savannah Rapids is easily one of the most versatile and beautiful locations in the CSRA. With the Savannah River on one side and the Augusta Canal on the other, you get gorgeous waterfront views, rustic wooden locks, and heavily shaded walking trails.
• Why I love it: The sunlight filtering through the trees during "golden hour" (the hour just before sunset) creates a warm, glowing, and romantic backdrop for maternity and family sessions.
2. Downtown Augusta & Broad Street
Best for: Senior & Graduation Portraits, Branding, and Urban Vibes
If you prefer a more modern, edgy, or urban aesthetic, Downtown Augusta is the place to be. We can utilize the historic brick alleyways, colorful painted murals, and the classic storefronts along Broad Street.
• Why I love it: It offers endless variety within just a few blocks. It is perfect for high school and Augusta University seniors who want their personality and style to take center stage against a vibrant city backdrop.
3. Phinizy Swamp Nature Park
Best for: Adventurous Families and Unique Maternity Shoots
Don’t let the word "swamp" fool you! Phinizy is an absolute hidden gem. With its sweeping boardwalks, hanging Spanish moss, and towering bald cypress trees, it offers a distinctly Southern, moody, and magical vibe.
• Why I love it: The wooden boardwalks provide natural "leading lines" that draw the viewer's eye straight to you, making for incredibly striking, artistic portraits.
4. Pendleton King Park
Best for: Quick Family Minis and Spring/Fall Foliage
Located right in the heart of Augusta, Pendleton King Park is a massive 64-acre bird sanctuary. It features beautifully manicured gardens, large open fields, and the historic Franke Pavilion.
• Why I love it: It is highly accessible and very kid-friendly. If you have young children who need room to run around and be silly during our session, the open spaces here are perfect for capturing those authentic, candid laughs.
5. The Augusta Canal Trail (Near Enterprise Mill)
Best for: Engagement Sessions and Classic Portraits
The historic Enterprise Mill area perfectly blends Augusta’s industrial history with natural beauty. The red brick of the mill contrasting with the flowing water of the canal creates a stunning, timeless look.
• Why I love it: It offers a quiet, relaxed atmosphere with a mix of architectural and natural textures. It is a fantastic spot to get comfortable in front of the camera.
