One of the coolest parts of the ceramic process is seeing how much everything changes.
This stage is called *bisque*. Once a piece is completely dry, it’s loaded into the kiln for its first firing at a lower temperature. The clay begins to sinter, making it stronger while staying porous, and burns away any remaining organic material.
Bisque is also where the clay tends to tell the truth. Hidden cracks, weak joins, or other flaws often (but not always) reveal themselves before a piece ever reaches the glaze kiln.
This stage can be frustrating. It’s where you begin to realize that making something that will last isn’t just about creating a form- it’s about understanding the material itself. Learning how clay behaves as it dries, shrinks, and moves through each stage of the firing process is what helps you prevent those defects in the first place.
Every clay body has its own personality, too. Some change color dramatically, some stay almost the same, and each one responds a little differently to drying, firing, and thermal stress. My clay body starts out as an iron-rich brown, then emerges from the bisque kiln a vibrant orange. After its final firing at over 2,200°F, it matures into the deep, warm brown you see in my finished work.
It’s one of those behind-the-scenes stages most people never see, but It’s where the transformation really begins. 🧙
