Well baseball fans, we have wrapped up another season together. I realize many of you many not be a numbers cruncher. You have been a photo admirer. For this I thank you. I thank everyone for following and all your comments. Since baseball is a game of numbers, here are some for us to wrap our heads around. From the end of April to the 3rd week in July, my camera has recorded no less than 22,600 photos. 6178 have been posted. That is an average of 73% falling to the cutting floor as they say in the newspaper business. This has meant a total of no less than 452 hours of culling photos-- (38) 12 hr. days. (Not including the time of shooting and traveling because that is so much fun!!) :) Really....I am not being sarcastic. If I counted each game I could add a minimum of another 174 hours. I am not even going to try and calculate travel time. Those are the stats folks. That is what is behind each photo that makes it to Facebook. What does not show in the stats are the many smiles, the joy of playing and the disappointment coming with the close of the season for each boy. The stats do not show the family in the stands consistently there cheering on the boys or showing their disapproval of an errant call by the umpire. The stats do not show all the hard work from the boys or the coaches put in before the games ever take place. Also not on the paperwork, the coaches' frustration over repetitive commands falling on immature ears that are just not registering. Someday, a lightbulb will come on. During a game, that boy will hear it and put it into action. That too is not in the stats. Food in-between games do not show up in the stats...the wolfing down snacks while replaying the game completed creating more team camaraderie within the boys. The lost hats, misplaces shoes....the untied shoes, and the sunflower seeds...these will not find their way into the stats either. The number of younger children sleeping in the wagons or strollers as the heat and game wears on -- not recorded. In the annals of our hearts and minds we will record all of this. We will record the new friends, the reacquainted friends, and the memories coming with them. We will record the travel trips and the card games.
No, none of this is in the stats. But every bit of it is written on the hearts of the young, old, and an observer. May your heart be etched with the memories of this season
